I bought Rite Publishing's 1001 Spells and they include a hero lab file with all the spells. I get this error when trying to install it

C:\Program Files (x86)\Hero Lab\HeroLab.exe
3.9a 279

major: 6, minor: 0, build: 6002, platform: 2, version: Service Pack 2, spmaj: 2, spmin: 0, suitemask: 00000100, type: 1

Type: bad read

What type of problem am I having? Thanks

Dwayne and I are having the same issue. I just tried reinstalling Hero Lab (all default settings) and have all the Wolf Lair data packages. I was using the d20pfsrd community data set prior to reinstall, but I didn't set it back up this time.

HeroLab.exe has encountered an error and needs to close.

Please email a DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WERE DOING, in as much detail as possible, along with this message, to support@wolflair.com. PLEASE NOTE: Unless you tell us what you were doing, we won't have enough information to fix this problem!

Right click and choose "Copy to Clipboard" to copy these details, or you can find them in this file: C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\lwderror7440.txt

I also sent an email to support@wolflair.com referencing this thread. I attached one of the files causing the error to the email for reference.

Sorry about that. I know HL needs to run in admin mode so thought I would give that a shot.
Just as an FYI but needing to run in Admin mode is is not needed as much any more as of v3.8. The reason LW moved all the file locations around for was that they met Windows Standards and needs for Admin mode was removed.

Not saying its not a good idea to try still but 99% of the admin needs should no longer be needed by HL.

Lone Wolf sure is silent about this. I wonder why?

Maybe they are working on it?

At the very least Lone Wolf can't be accused of lethargy, look at the forums regarding scripting, license issues and other after sales support. I'd presume this error is a tad more complex to investigate!

This is a crash bug that we aren't able to reproduce on our end - everything works perfectly for us. When we can't reproduce a bug, trying to figure out the problem is extremely difficult and very time-consuming. These types of bugs are a developer's worst nightmare, as I'm sure many of the software jockeys here on the forums will attest to. We're actively investigating this issue, but we haven't figured it out yet. :(

Thanks for everyone's patience while we continue to research what could be going wrong!

Just so everyone knows, Lone Wolf isn't blowing smoke up your rear end, they are working with me to get this resolved. They sent me a beta to check and sent me another one today which I'll check when I get home. They're definitely working on the issue.

I tried disabling my antivirus (ESET NOD32) and that didn't seem to help either. This seems to be almost certainly related to specific hardware and/or software combinations and those are the hardest problems to fix. I started my career doing software QA and this is the sort of issue that gives you nightmares :)

I'll add my two cents as well. I have been working with Colen as well and had email correspondence with him twice yesterday.

I think we have this issue identified, we're just doing some final testing now. Question for people - did anyone who had problems with Hero Lab crashing download through drivethruRPG?

Mine was downloaded through Paizo, the Dragonrider class files anyway. Also, I just got home and tested the latest fix from Colen and I was able to successfully load the Dragonrider class!

The latest build I got from Colen also worked for me. The fixed build is here:

Edited by Colen - please don't post private betas without asking us first!

It may still be considered beta code, so proceed with caution. However, if you have the files and can't import them, it's worth a shot.

Sorry guys, not quite ready to release yet - still working on a couple of issues with the mac version of 3.9b. freeAgent, please don't publically share links to beta releases we send to you without asking us first - they sometimes have shortcuts taken or other issues that make them unsuitable for public consumption.
