Dual Spell Schools

Some of the newer d20 supplements have spells that belong to 2 spell schools. Is this easily done in Hero Lab? I didn't see support for it in the editor, but I can manually edit the files if I need to.

I didn't realize this was being done. Fortunately, the way HL handles everything will make this easy to do. Basically, the handling of spell schools will need to be switched over to work like the handling of subschools in the editor. I'll put this on the todo list to get fixed.

In the meantime, you should be able to deal with this easily by manually editing the data file. Within the XML "thing" element for the spell, you'll see a child "tag" element that specifies the spell school. Simply duplicate this tag element and modify the duplicate to specify the tag id of the second school.

NOTE! Be careful to NOT edit the data file manually while it is open within the editor. The editor caches its contents and overwrites the file when it saves changes. So any manual changes will be lost if you have the file open in the editor while you also edit it manually.

NOTE! Colen is the expert on this stuff, so there may be something that I'm overlooking in this that will cause the above solution to fail. I'm flagging this to his attention, just in case, but he won't be back until Monday to verify it. If you run into problems, he'll be able to answer them on Monday.

How exactly does the 'multiple schools' thing work? For example,
let's say I'm a wizard who specialized in Necromancy and has
Evocation and Transmutation has his forbidden schools. What happens
with a spell is from Necromancy AND Evocation schools? Can I take it
as a specialized spell, even though it's forbidden? What if it was
Evocation & Enchantment - would it be ok to take that, even though
one of those schools is forbidden to me?

Alternatively, could you name one of the supplements that uses or
explains the 'multiple schools' technique so we can check it out?

Player's Handbook II had dual spell schools (I think; I'll double check tonight), but basically if any of the schools are forbidden to your wizard, you can't take the spell, even if the other school is your specialty. And I believe the spell gets all the specialist benefits if one of the schools is your wizard's specialty. I'd have to double check that last point though.

Awesome, I just checked PHB2 and you're right. That should be easy to
support in the manner Rob mentioned.
