Well this is my new time eating project. I am going to start looking
at making custom outputs for AB. Anyone who has given this a try give
me a few pointers on what to avoid.

The problem is that Items (and therefore Tweaks) are processed
before options. That's why the option types make no difference...
I'm not aware of another way of doing it other than the one you have
already suggested (which is what I had to do for the Battletech
files...) :-(
Mind you, if you think of some ingenious (devious perhaps?) method,
I'd be more than happy to hear about it
Cheers,
Russell.

What exactly is your extension going to do? If you're looking for a 'how to
do it' example, I believe the sample one supplied with the construction kit
is very comprehensive. Aside from that, I think there's only one extension
so far, which is included in the import file for CAV.

I know of at least one other - included in v1.4 of my Battletech
files
It will output a 'Mech design to a html representation of
the 'Mech Recordsheet.
I made extensive use of the example one (that Colen mentions above)
and it IS quite comprehensive. I'm about halfway through a version
of the 'Mech extension that will actually PRINT a 'Mech recordsheet,
but I've been sidetracked on other things...
If you have any specific questions when you get started, I can try
and help out.
Cheers,
Russell.
