Well, sort of. There are several doc readers available that will
read HTML files, but I haven't found one yet that doesn't screw up
tables by displaying each row as a column, which makes the whole
thing practically unreadable. AvantGo displays the HTML verbatim, so
it looks great, but a 32K army list HTML file scrolls verrrrrry
sloooooowly on my Visor Deluxe. Plus, since it displays it verbatim,
the army list is about five screens wide, which makes it a bit
cumbersome.
Now, if Army Builder could save in some sort of "minimal HTML", that
would work great. Instead of big tables and such, maybe just a
narrow text file with hypertext links inserted. I don't care how
long it is, but having to scroll horizontally is a total pain. And
before anyone mentions it, yes, I know Army Builder will save in text
as well, but the formatting gets screwed up on a Palm screen.

I think Clan War Daimyo Edition was shipped with ABLite...
BTW, It's not the games going this route with AB, It's Rob (and thus
AB) going this route with the games manufacturers
I'm sure if
there was any other new games out there that would be willing to
package ABLite and some data files with their rulebook, Rob would be
more than happy to oblige them. (Right Rob?

Is there a reason to use V1.4? Creating data files with V2.0 is a lot
easier. The tools are better and you can also take advantage of lots of new
data file capabilities that have been added.

When you "lock" a file, it is tied to the computer you lock it on. As long
as you continue using that computer, the data file will be fully UNLOCKED.
Only when you use it on a different computer will the locking take effect.
The objective of locking is to ensure that no one else can modify the
author information and take credit for your efforts (which happened in the
early days of AB).
>2)Is there an editor for army builder 2.0? Is it possibile to use

There is a V2.0 of the Construction Kit to go with the V2.0 release of Army
Builder. You can download it from the web-site for free. As I mentioned
above, switching to V2.0 will save you a lot of effort when writing data files.

If someone else wrote the initial files and you are modifying them,
DEFINITELY include credits for the original author. The only time to not
credit an original author is if you are writing the files from scratch or
the author has requested not to be given any credit. That's just my
personal philosophy, though.

And I haven't forgotten. But there's only one of me, and I have to spread
myself pretty darn thin these days. There are other features that keep
getting higher priority because either they directly affect ALL users (or
at least a large chunk of them) or they are comparatively easy to
implement. The translation stuff represents a MAJOR amount of work, so I
still haven't made the time to add it in. But it keeps calling to me from
the todo list.

The first game to do this was Clan War Daimyo Edition, which was released
at GenCon this Summer. Crucible is the second. It looks like there will be
additional games doing this as well in the months to come.
What are your thoughts on the approach? I realize that you probably like
the idea in general, but I'm curious what you think about the execution.
What did we do right? What changes would you recommend for future bundling
efforts? I'm pretty green at this, so I'd appreciate all constructive

There is no way that a useful version of AB will be possible on the current
handheld systems. AB requires too many resources and too much real estate.
This might be a possible avenue in the future, though.
However, the intent is that you CAN make use of handheld systems with V2.0.
AB2 introduced the ability to save rosters to a publicly defined XML file
format. The Construction Kit includes full source code for reading these
files, plus a sample application. Using this, it would be relatively
straightforward for someone to write a roster viewer for handheld systems,
and there are a few users who have already indicated that they were going
to write these. This wouldn't allow you to actually edit your rosters, but
it would let you view your roster and track things like wounds and the
consumption of limited-use items.
I'm hopeful that we'll see some preliminary offerings for handheld users by
the end of the year.
Thanks, Rob

Being that I already own the full version, I still thought the idea was great. However NO WHERE on the Crucible book does it even mention it. No sticker no nothing. That could help.
Obvisously the more games you get to the more people will find out about AB.
Have you talked to the folks doing Mage Knight? Shops here can't keep enough of that game on the shelves at this point.
About the only things I can think of is to:
A) see if the game manufacturers can put some kind of sticker on the materials so folks know they get AB as part of the purchase and
B) maybe include that particular game file with the disc. I realize this last option may be too hard to do depending on how many game systems are gonna be including AB.

I would be very interested in a PDA Armybuilder : )

The game companies handle all of that, and I have no control over it. They
HAVE been nice enough to offer a full-page "ad" within the book to promote
the tool. As AB gains penetration, the bundling will become a bigger sales
advantage for the game and thereby provide more compelling reason to
advertise its inclusion.
I definitely like the idea of the stickers, since they can be affixed to
existing stock and don't require any art changes.
>Obvisously the more games you get to the more people will find out about AB.
That's the whole idea! With the Clan War and Crucible bundles, I'm guessing
that AB ought to gain a pretty good level of visibility among fantasy
players. The next step is to work out a bundling with a major scifi game
system to gain visibility in that segment.
>Have you talked to the folks doing Mage Knight? Shops here can't keep

Haven't talked to them yet. It's on my todo list. I've been focused on some
high-priority stuff on this end that will be announced in the
not-too-distant future. Once you hear about it, I think you'll agree it
ought to take priority.

The data files for both games ARE included on the bundled CD. The objective
is to enable gamers who purchase the game to start using AB immediately
with the game.
Thanks for the suggestion about the stickers!!!

BTW, It's not the games going this route with AB, It's Rob (and thus
AB) going this route with the games manufacturers

there was any other new games out there that would be willing to
package ABLite and some data files with their rulebook, Rob would be
more than happy to oblige them.

What changes would you recommend for future bundling
efforts? I'm pretty green at this, so I'd appreciate all constructive
suggestions.

I just picked upthe Crucible rules and noticed AB Lite is on a CD in the back. Any other games going this route with Army Builder??
The first game to do this was Clan War Daimyo Edition, which was released at GenCon this Summer. Crucible is the second. It looks like there will be additional games doing this as well in the months to come.
What are your thoughts on the approach? I realize that you probably like the idea in general, but I'm curious what you think about the execution. What did we do right? What changes would you recommend for future bundling efforts? I'm pretty green at this, so I'd appreciate all constructive suggestions.

Thanks, Rob

I'm hopeful that we'll see some preliminary offerings for handheld users by the end of the year.
Thanks, Rob

The game companies handle all of that, and I have no control over it. They
HAVE been nice enough to offer a full-page "ad" within the book to promote
the tool. As AB gains penetration, the bundling will become a bigger sales
advantage for the game and thereby provide more compelling reason to
advertise its inclusion.
I definitely like the idea of the stickers, since they can be affixed to
existing stock and don't require any art changes.

That's the whole idea! With the Clan War and Crucible bundles, I'm guessing
that AB ought to gain a pretty good level of visibility among fantasy
players. The next step is to work out a bundling with a major scifi game
system to gain visibility in that segment.
