I'm seeing some odd behaivior that hopefully someone here can
explain. In my definition file I have the following:

items
General | gen | gen | 0 | 1 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Agility | agil | agil | 0 | 1 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Strength | str | str | 0 | 1 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Passing | pass | pass | 0 | 1 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Physical | phys | phys | 0 | 1 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Traits | trat | trat | 0 | 1 |
*hide* | 0 | 0 | 1
Special | spec | spec | 0 | 0 |
spl,mpl,big | 0 | 0 | 1
Weapons | weap | weap | 0 | 1 |
*hide* | 0 | 0 | 1

When I pull up a given unit, and try to give them items, 'Traits'
behaives properly and never appears in the drop-down. 'Weapons',
however, *does* appear. 'Special' also behaives properly.

Any clues?

Steve (That's Mr. Bugman to you, lad...)

Are you sure you've recompiled the definition since you made the change?
I've made changes in the past and forgotten to do this, very confusing
until I worked it out.

I see.

Would it be possible for you to upload your files (and a copy of the
datadef) to the Files section of this group for us to take a look at? I'm
not an expert on definition file behaviours, but it seems like everything
should be working based on what you pasted.

*hide* attribute may only hide One item category. the second one is
ignored and displayed normaly. I did notice it too. As theses items can
not be selected by the user, you may use only one category and restrict
the options/local attributes to select the items.

Ahhhh, got it. That explains it, then. I'll just use the 'spec:-x' attribute
to make it 'disappear'.

Perhaps you have a special type of item that you don't want the user to be
able to select but you want to be able to attach to units via options or
that special units would always have a specific item but that item is not
available to anyone else (special characters' items for example). There
could always be other reasons as well...

I'm new too, but the reason *I* wanted to hide the category was to create items
which are not actually selectable by the player, but which come stock with
certain units, and to make sure they appear as items, not abilities, options,
etc.

OH! Hey, this is something I wanted to do with my files too! Excellent,
thank you very much. In Dark Age (at this point in time) all
units/characters are defined by their equipment, so I wanted their gear to
show, but not be selectable. Now this is the case, thanks.

One more question. (maybe I should go back and RTFM?)

What are these three values here (spl, mpl, big), for the visible
categories, or more precisely, what are you doing?

It is in the manual, but they're the unit categories which the items are visible
to by default. Anyone else would need to use the spec: attribute to gain
access.
