Data files: Where does one find them?

I posted something similar yesterday in the AB forum (still no responses) so I thought I would take a stab in this forum.

I thought I would check to see if there was an OnG update since the new empire book came out. When you go to the Downloads section, there are 3 empire updates.

Which one do I choose?

Who are the authors?

Why can't we see any other files here? Why are the only downloads the 3 empire updates?

Why does one of them say that I need to install the previous updates or it won't work, and where/what are those updates?

I realize now that letting my license lapse a month or so ago was a big mistake. From the looks of things here at the website, they made it so utterly confusing and ridiculous that you are forced to either learn to author yourself, or pay them $$$. Is this true? Do you all author your own files?

I can barely find the time to paint and play, let alone figure out the nuances of programming a data file...

I think most people support the software they use, and therefore let the automatic updates feature get the latest version of the data files.

Files on these forums are generally things in testing. The versions in the auto-updates can be found at http://www.wolflair.com/rightframe.php?context=status&page=army_builder.
