Custom Creatures

Hi, new HLer here. Loving the features and the ease with which I can knock up NPCs.
I'd love to be able to create custom creatures using the same system, but as I understand it, I can only create from pre-given creature types and not build completely from scratch. Is this correct, or is it possible to create new monster types?
Thanks

Good bump, I don't ever remember seeing this thread before, although it was a while back. You absolutely can create new creatures in the Editor. I do it all the time.

All you need to do is go to Tools -> Launch Editor and from there you can see a tab for "Creatures". It's often easiest to "New (Copy)" and use some other Creature as a template. It can get a bit complicate depending on what you are trying to do, though, which is why it's best to copy something similar to what you want to give you a good baseline to work from.

You may need to use the "Racial Ability" tab, for example, to make certain creature specific entries/effects that you might want to use. There are some details on the stickied "Code Examples" thread on this forum for some of those things when it comes to dealing with Natural Weapons and stuff like that. I think in the 2nd or 3rd post if you skim down through them.

You'll need to save your file, for something specific to me I just save it into something like "HouseRules.user". You can also do some other little things like define a "HouseRules" source and such, which is mainly useful for trying to manage things that might apply to only certain settings and the like, but that's not a big deal for things like Creatures anyway.

If you run into something specific that you can't do, though, definitely jump back and let us know and I'll be happy to help out if I can.
