Creature Classes?

Say I want to take a creature that isn't normally defined by classes and make it so. For example, I want an ancient copper dragon that has levels as a wizard and cleric. Do I have to define a favored class object for each creature/class combo? Or might there be a single field that defines whether or not a given creature/race can chose class levels even if it doesn't get a favored class bonus?

You mean you want to add favored class options to a dragon wizard?

You can create a single Favored Class ability for multiple class/race combos I believe (as long as the effect is the same for all classes), but the main hurdle is that you have to get the FC on the hero to begin with, so that it can be selected by wizard (or whatever) class levels. I'd create a mechanic that bootstraps the FC, since the alternative (copying the dragon race, adding the FC as a bootstrap there, and replacing the original race) is kinda clunky.

Well, I primarily just want the base ability to add classes, favored or not. Is "favored classes" the only way to do that? Or can I just check a box somewhere that allows me to add classes, even if they're not favored?

You can always add classes to any character in Hero Lab.

Starting with a blank character, I added the "Dragon, Copper, Ancient" race on the Background tab, and then went to the classes tab, and clicked on the text that says "click here to add optional class levels" (which is just below the HP for the dragon, ancient, copper race listing on the Classes tab), and I was able to add several levels each of Wizard and Cleric.

Ah. It wasn't in the place I was used to seeing it, so I thought it was precluded. Thanks.

Or maybe I just had a complete lapse of reason. That is the usual place for it. But when I selected a Dragon as the race, all the validation rules changed, a bunch of stuff on the "Background" tab disappeared, and all the red warnings disappeared.

I guess when I saw all of that, it instilled within me the illusion that the ability to select class levels also disappeared.
