Creating Game World History with Event Lists

Hey guys,

Just got Realm Works and I'm fighting through the initial learning curve. I'm building a standard superhero world that will, hopefully, be the home of multiple campaigns.

What I want to do is create a History of the World event list, and I want that overview list to contain both individual events and other event lists. For example:

• 1930: The Shadow becomes active [single event]
• 1938: Superman becomes active [single event]
• 1939 - 1945: World War II [event list]
• 1939: Steve Rogers Becomes Captain America [single event]

...and so on.

I've tried approaching this a couple different ways but haven't been able to create the kind of nested world history event list I'm shooting for. I'm sure I'm just suffering from newb-itis here, but if someone could give me step-by-step directions for doing this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Seems pretty straight forward.

Create the top level event list. Give it a name that makes sense to you. Start adding events and subordinate event lists to it.

In order to get them to appear in some sort of chronological order you'll need to use a trick. Give each event or event list a prefix of the year, or the numeric date of the event or when the list starts. At the top of the navigation tree you'll see a box that says world almanac with a crossed hammer and wrench, left click the hammer and wrench icon. Select "Show prefix before name when available." left click the icon again and select "Sort Topics->Prefix."

That sounds like what you want.

As @kbs666 said, just start with a large event list topic, divide it up into time periods that contain discrete events or sub-periods, and try to keep every discrete event within the appropriate (sub-)period. Use prefixes with a YYYY-MM(-DD) scheme to keep things sorted in chronological order if needed.

An example:

• World History (Event-List)
  • 1900s (Time Period)
    • 1930 - The Shadow becomes active (Event)
    • 1938 - Superman becomes active (Event)
      
    • 1939-1945 - World War II (Time Period)
      • 1939-04 - Steve Rogers Becomes Captain America (Event)
      • 1941-12 - Battle of Pearl Harbor, and the US gets involved (Event)
    • 1948 - Some Other Fancy Event (Event)
      
  • 2000s (Time Period)

...and so on. Point is, see how both events that happened in 1939 and 1941 are put within the 1939-1945 time period as their container.

Thanks for the advice, guys! The prefix tip is super helpful, and the video and time period/timeline info is great. I think I can do exactly what I wanted to do now. Very cool!
