Creating a new race

Zaphod Beebledoc

Well-known member
I want to create a new race in HL, which I am calling the Jarbol, with these base stats.

+2 Ability: Fast Healer

+2 Ability: +4 Climbing

+1 Ability: Natural Weapon (Str+d6) (tail)

-2 Ability: Weakness (tail) (attacks to tail receive +2 damage)

-1 Ability: -2 Survival (lack of food)

I'm looking in the editor, but I'm not sure if the file I'm trying to look at is the correct one however.

It's path is C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\savage\source\thing_races.dat

I get this message when I try to open it, and it is read-only

I 've got SW and D20 systems. I'm storing my portfolios in C:\Users\Antony\dropbox\role playing\hero lab\savage worlds.

Help! :o

No, no, you don't want to modify the source files, and in the main system it wouldn't do you any good anyway. All you need to do is start the Editor and create a new .user file. If I find some time this week I may try to see if I can put together some kind of quick-start or introduction guide to making data files for Savage Worlds in Hero Lab.

Good evening, Zaphod...

Here's what you can do. Open Hero Lab, and start the Savage Worlds module.
Click on Help in the top menu bar. Scroll down and click on Savage Worlds Manual.
Your browser will come up with the aforementioned manual. Scroll down to #14 Adding Custom Content and click on it.
Click where it says Click here for more information on using the Editor with Savage Worlds.
Welcome to the Editor Tutorial! The one you're after is Tutorial #13. It covers creating a Race using the Savage Worlds Deluxe rules.

Let me know if you need anything else!

*Snatches hands back like they could get burnt* :)

I started at the beginning, probably a good place to start... :) (I think it best. ;) )

I completely forgot about that! Being in IT I really should remember the phrase; RTFM. ;) Worse is that in the Common Code Examples thread I even mention the several places, like Caped mentions above, where it covers making data files pretty well. Sorry about forgetting that, Caped!

Ok, so following tutorials, 1, 2, 3 and 13 I've been able to add the Jarbol race, and then the tail. That was mainly due to the tail being a copy of the pre-existing Natural Weapon.

I've got a copy of the Ultimate Characters Guide by Aaron T Huss. Using that, I've built my new race, the Jarbol, and now want to add the other racial stats below.

+2 Abilities: Fast Healer

+2 Abilities: +4 Climbing

+1 Abilities: +2 Vigor (poison & disease)

-2 Abilities: Weakness (tail) (attacks to tail receive +2 damage)

-1 Abilitiy: -2 Survival (lack of food)

Check out some of the other .user files out there on the Racial Abilities and/or Racial Properties tabs. You should find some good examples of those out there, but let me know if you still can't figure these out and I'll try to walk you through a few of them, but I can't do it tonight but maybe tomorrow.

I think the only one of those that will require background code is the +4 Climbing. Perhaps a Conditional on the In-Play tab for the -2 Survival if you feel ambitious. If you can create a Race like that, you can create a few new Racial Properties, too! We can help you with the background code to apply the modifiers.
