Companion leveling for Multi-class

Is anyone else using a multi-class Druid/whatever? I began as a Rogue, added Druid at level 2. That gave me my animal companion. I leveled again and at level 3 took Rogue again, so I am a level 2 Rogue, level 1 Druid. My animal companion was with me, and got the same XP as I did, which would have advanced it.... but did not. The rules say "with each level the Druid advances" the animal companion does as well.... but I am multi-class. Does my companion REALLY only advance if I add to Druid levels? That makes no sense. Also screws up my plans a bit.............

Your companion only advances when you add a level of a class which grants a companion. For example, the companion of a druid 1, fighter 1, has an effective druid level of 1. A druid 1, cavalier 1's animal companion has an effective druid level of 2 (since both classes grant animal companions).
