Army builder for the IPad?

I also registered just to add my thanks to LoneWolf for working on this. I'm running Parallels Desktop on my Mac, and the only thing I'm using it for now is running Army Builder. Transitioned all other programs to Mac versions, and oddly enough I'm not much of a computer gamer.

Also just acquired an I-Pad and love it! Spent about two weeks tearing all of my print rule/army books apart and running them through my scanner to save as PDFs. Don't get me started on my wife asking exactly how much all those books cost...

I'm currently using an I-pad app called PDF Reader Pro. It has a global bookmark system that allows it to open the correct file and page for rules references, etc. Takes awhile to set up the bookmarks, but well worth it to look up specific game/army rules quickly while playing.

I used pc and windows last 15 years. I'm going to buy a new mac due to lot of things. I think everything is moving to mac systems. My advice is you have to consider seriously the developing of mac version and app version (the tech market of the next 5-10 years) of AB.

While I think it would be awesome to have AB on my iPad or Mac I doubt highly that everythign is going to be moving to mac systems. Until you can get a mac for under $400 mac will never take over or come close to taking over the pc market. Mac's are handy I will give them that but I still prefer my PC over my Mac.

Let's not get into any religious debates here guys, OK? ;)

I'd like to add my voice, but I have a different tack:

I'd like to use my PC to create my AB rosters, and then transfer them into an app that can not only make adjustments, but act as a fully-functional army list with a reference back end.

For instance, someone says "Ok, close combat here, on your orcs/black knights/ironguts/whatever."

I simply select the unit, and a full screen unit breakdown appears, complete with all magical effects (which I apply on the fly as they happen), magic items, heroes, anything I need to remember about the unit, instead of a horrible dry stat line based readout. I hit "back", and it takes me back to my roster, after applying casualties, and the whole combat can be tracked on the iPad.

When I am done, I would at least be able to review the battle (especially if I was able to input who they were fighting) and go through the whole battle turn-by-turn and see where my troops performed well/badly. (Even better if the other person can also do the same thing and have AB itself reconcile BOTH histories on the PC once the data is re-uploaded or whatever - dunno if it's possible, but it'd be epic)

I see it more as an extension, rather than a replacement, for Army Builder. I much prefer using a full-blown PC for the initial roster, but want something I can easily take with me to the game for fine adjustments and then having the whole battle recorded.

Sweet!!

I would have to agree with everyone here. I've been scouring the App store to no end for a decent Army Builder like app to build my gaming armies and none can compare. You guys have the market on this one. I would pay the same amount for an iPad version or even as I own the PC version I would pay for an additional license for my ipad to run it. Either way I would buy in...

Definetely. On respect of customers with prices and supports.

That is awesome, what did you use to scan those pages in? I bet it took several weeks depending on how you did it.

Another great PDF program for both the iPhone and iPad is called Good Reader.

I am on the verge of scanning all my books as well. First on the list will probably be dystopian cause I already have it spiral bound. Great excuse to get that done btw.

It did take about 4 weeks. My scanner isn't capable of dual-siding, so had to piece the documents together in Word before saving them off as a full PDF. I understand the game companies concerns on IP w/ electronic formats, but it'd be incredible if they sold their rules and supplements in electronic formats. I'd be pretty much guaranteed to buy every Army Book, Codex, etc instead of just the 2-3 I plan on building armies for.

Sadly, it's one of those cases where the results just don't bear out. The audience for RPG supplements also happens to sharply intersect with the "poor student" segment of the population, and there's almost a culture of photocopied pages, shared books, and now downloaded PDFs. One hopes that, like Baen, the increased audience makes up for the amount of books that are simply acquired, but my understanding is that the outlook is grim, one of the reasons WotC stopped doing PDF for their books.

You're probably correct. I'm a little later in my life and more established. Tends to allow me a bit more discretionary spending. Sometimes you forget what it was like to be 19-20 and broke.

I was just on the main site and noticed that the FAQ for Army Builder states you are NOT and do not have plans to create a Mac port of the program. Considering this thread you might want to update that on the FAQ to reflect the change.

If I was someone just surfing around and hit your site and saw what is there now, I would stop reading and leave. On the other hand, as a Mac user if I knew you were actively developing something I would be more inclined to stick around and learn more about your product.

I personally use both Mac and Windows (Mac primarily) so already have a license for my Windows machine, but others who are Mac only will probably overlook your product pretty quickly after reading your FAQ.

just a thought.

Thank you for a great product,

There is already an android armylist builder in the android market.

I am currently using it, and it works fine. But armybuilder has more options (if you ever need them that is).
I use the android version all the time now, and for very strict tournaments I tend to use the lonewolf version, since you have slightly more verbose printing options of your roster.

I've used AB since it came out. I only have an iphone and have no plans to get an ipad. Would the proposed app be too small to use on iphone? I could see my using it at tournaments etc on iphone, but not carting around a clunky ipad.

Good news, this thread isn't for you :p

This thread seems to have gone an interesting direction, so I wanted to insert some thoughts from an iPad owner. The first day I got my iPad I wanted to throw my netbook out the window. Every day since then I have had to restrain myself from throwing said netbook out of said window. There are only two things that keep me from enacting my revenge, Quicken and ArmyBuilder. Honestly, the first real 40k army creation app that comes out I will buy. If it's not army builder, I will most likely transition. That's not meant to be a threat to Lone Wolf Dev, it's just I am done with lugging around my netbook just to tweak an army list.

As a long time PC user and non-mac fanboy I really fell in love with the form, function, and design of the iPad. The moment I played with it I saw the potential for a touch screen interface army building. It already has supplanted my paper lists with the dynamic HTML output, now I just want to be able to create on it too.

So if you want to have your lists on your iPhone/Droid for your friends to look at, learn to use the web output. If you want to get your army builder on a non-existent android 3.0 honeycomb machine, start a new thread. I am just tired of seeing posts about how user XXXX would never buy an iPad, implying that Lone Wolf should scrap development of an App.

Anyway, thanks to Lone Wolf Dev for keeping up the good work on this, I like that they are committed enough to put it in their 2011 newsletter. Now just hurry up so I can give you more money :D.

Rix,

I don't think anyone here is saying DONT MAKE AN IPAD App. I think people have been more asking if said iPad app will be also functional on an iPhone or even iPod touch as well. Given the iOS functionality and the fact that many apps are already functional on both, i think this is a legitimate question.

Given future use of this tool, I can't say if a iPad ONLY version would get me to buy an iPad, likely not going to happen, however if the functionally did exist to also use the app on iPod Touch or iPhone I definitely would be buying that version as it really does make me free to choose my format then.

The iPad is a great device, but to be fair, it is NOT a replacement for a laptop computer. It is a solid middle of the road choice though between a computer and a eReader, and I think Apple has shown its benefits which is why Android is so hot to get Honeycomb units out to the public.

This isn't to diminish your post, but simply clarify(in my understanding) what the other posts have been asking. Again, no one has said don't make the app, but I think everyone here is simply asking will it also work with (insert other iOS device here). This right there says continue to develop the application!

I think that the ipad and an iphone app would be a great business move. As a person who has purchased numerous copies of our product, I am currently using Army Builder 2.0. Now i you think I am one of those who doesn't support you, I truly do having bought 3 or 4 licenses over the last 10 years).
But I know most of my gaming group (20 plus people) would also buy up these apps if they were available.
You need to recoup your costs for development as quickly as possible, so I think the ipad/iphone is the way to go.
Surely there are unemployed developers out there who can be found to do these if you don't have the resources.
I think this forum shows there is a lot of support for going this way.

As a Mac guy, I have had to purchase Parallels Desktop, Windows XP, just to be able to run your product. That is what I use it for 90% plus amount of the time. Can you imagine how many mac users out there, that have not gone this far? tap the market
