Hello,
When using the Path to Glory datafile (both version 1.0 and
1.01) for Army Builder I've been experiencing a problem that causes
an error message to appear. Whenever I click on the star (where you
can put advancements on a unit such as magic stuff or banners) I get
the following error message:

"The total width of all visible stats columns exceeds the available
space. Please user narrower column widths or hide some stats or
shrink the Options column width. This is a non-recoverable error
and Army Builder must now exit."

I'm not sure what the problem is or what is causing it but
I think something is wrong with the datafile. I receive that error
message every time I click on the star when using the Path to Glory
datafile. I've not had this problem with any other set of datafiles
in Army Builder.

I contacted the person who made the datafile
(Mach_5@hotmail.com) and neither they nor any other people I've
spoken to (and I've made posts on my Warhammer Forum) are
experiencing the same problem. Mach_5@hotmail.com and my friends
tell me that they think the problem is in Army Builder. So, I'm
contacting you to see if you can pinpoint the problem and also help
me fix it or release a new version of AB that takes care of the
bug. I really want to be able to use the new Path to Glory datafile
because I'm setting up a Path to Glory league but I can't use it as
long as this bug persists.

Thank You,

In short, what you need to do is go inside the datadef.pog file and make the
columns smaller. If the data file is locked you're going to need to contact
the author to make the columns smaller. If you need help doing this you can
always e-mail here.

Most likely, the author of the data files is running AB at a higher
resolutoin than you are (as must be the other people you've spoken to).
Designers of data files should ALWAYS verify that their files work
correctly for users running at 800x600 resolution. This can be verified
simply by shrinking the AB window to its minimum size and then
loading/using the data files. It's probable that this was not done and the
files consequently run into problems at the lower resolution you are running.

Data files should be designed for 800x600 resolution. When the user
enlarges the window, all columns are enlarged automatically by AB. The
author can even provide guidance to AB about which columns to enlarge
before others to take best advantage of the larger size.

Hopefully, the author of the Path to Glory files will see this post.
However, you might wish to forward this to him directly so that he can
address the problem and get it corrected.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hmm... I'll have to double check my two. I think they're okay though. Thanks

Hey,
I'm running a resolution of 1280 and the PTG
datafile still didn't work. I'm not sure what to do,
I don't want to run at a higher resolution than that.
I don't mind 1280 but I prefer the 1152 setting and
want to run it at that. I'm gonna forward what you
said Rob to the author of the datafile (he made some
Warhammer datafiles too I believe) and see what he
says and does. I'm incredibly miffed that the
datafile isn't working for me. But, I do appreciate
the help that Brad has been giving me and also your
response, Rob. It is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

In general, this problem occurs when an author designs data files for a
higher resolution and the user then tries using them at a lower resolution.
That was my assumption in my original response, but it appears that doesn't
apply in your case.

I'm running AB at 1280x1024 on my machine and I can't get the problem to
occur, even with AB maximized to the full screen size. Is there something
special that I need to do make this happen?

Please outline the exact sequence of steps you're taking to make this
occur. I'll duplicate them on my system and see if I can get the same
results to occur. If I can, then I can try to figure out why.

Thanks, Rob

Rob,
I appreciate your enthusiasm to help me. I
believe the problem may lie in that the original Path
To Glory datafile had a bug in it that my system
didn't like and since I saved the updated versions
over the old one that it wouldn't work properly for
whatever reason. Also, I'm running an unusual screen
resolution (1152 by 864) so I think they may have
contributed to it. I like the size of 1280 but don't
like how it appears and don't want to go down to below
1152, so 1152 just seems to fit perfectly for what I
want.

Thanks,
Jon

If you saved the new update over the old one, it will generally fully
replace the previous files, unless you specificially tell AB not to do so.
You can double-check this by deleting the game system first and then
importing just the new files again.

If AB works for me at 800x600 AND at 1280x1024, then it should be working
fine at 1152x864. In my previous post, I requested that you specify the
steps you are taking to generate the error. I still need that information,
since it's possible that I'm not doing things that same as you are.

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,
I appreciate your willingness to help but I
haven't been experiencing the problem since the
datafile author made the column widths smaller. As
the error message said, that was the problem and the
author making the widths smaller fixed the problem.

Thanks,
Jon
