AB 3.2c problem

Hi guys,

I added the additional unit info pop-ups in AB3.2b. The intent for the feature was to always show the special unit info, even when tooltips were disabled - my thinking was that even if you didn't want to see the "press the delete button to delete a unit" tips for new users, you'd still want to see the information about a unit when you moused over it.

However, based on the posts here, I'm wondering if there are changes we should make to how this feature works. Are the unit info popups you saw annoying, or were just unexpected? Do they bother you just on the "Available Units" grid, or just over the "Roster" tree, or on both? Do you like the idea, or just not want to see the unit info tips at all?

We will definitely be making the following changes in a future patch:
  • Moving the tooltip so that it doesn't make it harder to see the unit you're looking at.
  • Making sure the "right-click on a row to display unit information for that row" tooltip that appears if you hover over an empty area does NOT appear if tooltips are disabled.
  • Adding the ability to turn the the new "unit info" tooltips off altogether, if you just don't like the feature.

If those changes were made, would you still want to use the feature? Or would you simply turn it off, because you never want to see info for units you mouse over?

Thanks for your feedback on this - if there are problems with this feature, we'd like to get them solved and improve the usability of AB for everyone. :)

How about you just do a quick emergency patch to turn them off and then have this debate ?

For future reference it may be wise to always allow the user base the option to utilise a feature rather than making it mandatory.

I find it annoying.
Because, I'll shift the units around with the drag drop and it keeps popping up.
Plus as a long time user I know what the units are and don't need a reminder.
On the whole it's great for new users, but it would be better if you added the ability to turn it off for us pros.

Thanks for the feedback so far. We're looking to get a new release out early next week to correct this issue, so for those of you that don't like the feature - what don't you like about it? Do you never want to see it at all? Would it be useful if it worked slightly differently? Is there anything you do like about it that we should keep or improve?

Having this information will let us make the most improvement to the feature and keep it useful for as many of you as possible. :)

Thanks!

I just don't care for it at all to be honest. I find it actually covers up what I'm looking at. I'm not a big fan of tool tips to begin with though.

I'm sure there are users out there that like it so you should have it be able to be disabled.

The main thing I don't like about the feature is that it cannot be turned off.
It's simply not necessary to have it, when you're familiar with the army, although I understand it can be helpful for beginners.
It could be also a little annoying, when I want to examine closer a fragment of the roster, point it and get pop-up covering perfectly that fragment.

I´m annoyed by the pop-up too. I also find that it hides what i am searching for. If i want to see the unit info, i look in the window to the right, or right-click and choose unit-info. Most of the time i don´t need the info at all.
Also i find it a disturbense, because every time the mouse come to rest somewhere on the screen, the pop-up comes up as a sort of flash that calls for attension.
If you could just allow users to check "no pop-ups" in the settings menu, it would be fine.

Thanks for listening :)

Sorry for my poor English spelling:o

I haven't used AB for a little while, and I started it up yesterday and updated to the new version. The popups appeared and I just spent far longer than I should have to trying to turn off something that I don't need, don't want and find a hinderance to the use of my product, only to find out that I can't.
I couldn't find any clear reference to this update in the "what's new" part of the manual either as to where I should be looking to disable the popups.

I find it extremely irritating as when I mouse over the display of units at a less than rapid pace the popup flickers over the screen and obscures everything. Also if you position the mouse cursor between the letters of the word it doesn't appear, so even scrolling over a name makes it flicker. Additionally it covers up the units name and points cost in the main section of the screen.

In the smaller units box at the top it covers up most of the names so I can't see what unit I'm selecting without a box that often says 'no information' appearing to block my view. Pointless and infuriating, honestly.
First thing I did when I installed the program the first time was turn off all the help bubbles and such - I know the lists and have no need of the summaries, what I need is to be able to clearly see the names and costs of the units, and more importantly what's under my cursor.

Not happy with this at all.

Hey guys,

We just released V3.2d. This new update revises how the mouse-over behavior works to hopefully address the primary concerns cited about it - i.e. moving the info so it doesn't obscure the unit you're looking at. You can also disable the mechanism entirely if you still don't like the new behavior - just go to the Settings menu.
