I don't seem to be able to give an Assault Squad a rhino transport in AB.

I thought that the rules allowed it, yet even when I take their jump packs
from them, I still can't add a rhino.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thats because they dont have it as a transport option.

Yes - read the SM codex and notice they cant be given a transport vehicle.

You can alternately purchse the Assault Squad as a Fast Attack slot and then
devote a Heavy slot in the form of a Land Raider to become their proxy
transport.

But that is a rather large amount of points for a squad/transport combo!

Or, take a Veteran squad tricked out for HTH...

It was in a chapter approved article quite some time ago, IIRC
