Problem loading stock hero C-D

Nikmal

Well-known member
It says "Error reading specified file, Please verify that the file exists and it is a valid hero lab file".

All the others open but this one. :(

Should I reinstall it? Everytime I try and load the Stock hero C-D set. it gives me the above error. I need this. I have all the bestiaries and all the other supplements that is put out by lone wolf for Pathfinder.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce this. I'm able to open the portfolio and draw stock portfolios from it.

If no one else is having this problem, there probably is something damaged on your copy, and re-installing the Pathfinder files should overwrite it with an intact copy.

If another user does report that they can reproduce the error, then it's an error that will be fixed in the next update (since it's already been fixed in our database).

Mathias I did do a re-install and it still does not open. I downloaded the Hero Lab install package off of the Lone Wolf Web site, installed it and did not get repaired. Not sure what is going on. I am thinking I might have to uninstall in and then install it again but I am afraid I am going to loose all my settings and files that I have so customized over the last couple of years :(

Are you trying to open a portfolio? I'm not sure where in the user process you are having the problem. Could you provide some more specifics?

chiefweasel, we don't need people to ask him what's going on, when I've already responded to his post, we need people to report whether they're encountering the problem, too, so that we can determine whether the problem is specific to his copy, or a general problem.

understood, I am not understanding what the problem is and was tryign to collect some more information. Things like the type of system used, if the software is running in Demo mode, things like that. Also I'm not sure what is meant by "load the Stock hero C-D set". Is that trying to access it through HL or trying to get at it outside the program, or is this something different altogether.

So I'm sorry if I need to ask questions to determine if I am having the same issue or not. I was not able to understand the problem from the information that was provided. In the future I'll refrain myself from trying assist the community.

Again, sorry for any problems I may have caused.

I am pretty sure these are the set of stock files you can import into HL. So you would start HL and then go to "Portfolio->Import Stock Hero". Then you get presented with a large list of NPCs and Animals from the Bestiary and GMG. You double click and then a new window is presented that allows you to select what from the stock file you wish to actually import.

I have not had the time or anywhere near HL to actually see what it does on my system. Will try tonight.

I tried what ShadowChemosh suggested. While I did not see a file called "stock hero C-D" I did see "monsters C-D". I had no issue opening the file but some were grey as I do not own all the resorces yet.

Bottom line, I could not duplicate the error on my end.

Actually same here. I don't see "Stock Hero C-D" all I see is "Monsters C-D". I imported all of them without issues. Hmm so I am with Cheifweasel here a little more info or instructions on how to reproduce this would be a good step here. As I could totally be off here on what/where the issue is.... :(

Basically what I am doing is Portfolio - Import Stock Hero- Miscellaneous Monsters C-D (as in C through D monsters from the bestiaries)
Mathias got the jist of it.. sorry.

In that case, I just opened the file with no error regardless of what I have opened at the time I tried. :(

Hope you can figure it out.

I have tried everything I can think of short of completely uninstalling the software completely. I do not want to loose my settings for it as that represents a long time and a lot of work and customization.
So the short of it is.. it just won't open at all.

Could someone post their copy of Miscellaneous Monsters C-D here? I guess the next thing to try is for Nikmal to delete the copy that's on his computer and put a clean copy there. (My copy of that file may have already been tied to the new update or I'd do it myself).

The next thing to try after that is to simply wait - we're close to the next update, so see if a proper updating fixes things.

Tools menu...Explore Folders...Game System Data Folder is is how to get to the folder where you'll find the stock portfolio files.

Is it possible that he has loaded the monsters that Arron created a while back? But i think those were for 3.5 so not sure they would even load.

chiefweasel, If it said anything about 3.5 in it.. I would not even have downloaded it. I am trying to stick with Pathfinder as much as possible because I need it for Pathfinder Society. I use this to help me set up scenario's at the local game store I Coordinate for with PFS.

So hence I desperately need this fixed. :(

My *guess* is that the file got corrupted somehow and/or marked as read-only, so it's not being updated properly. The only way to fix that is to manually delete the file and then import the Pathfinder data files again. Just to be safe, I would manually delete *all* the data files and *all* the stock portfolios before importing again.

Note that the above steps will give you a clean start on all things Pathfinder, but it will *not* clear any settings. If you have custom ".user" files, you *will* lose those, but they can be saved off in advance and copied back into place after the replacement import.

Hope this helps...

@Rob would it not be safer in this case to just do the import of Pathfinder again but change the folder to "Pathfinder2". Then you can go into the "Pathfinder2" data set and try the import from their.

If it works then just copy the single .stock file over from Pathfinder2 folder over to Pathfinder.

Otherwise when I get home tonight I will post my version that worked last night.

I'm just worried that there might be additional files that somehow got flagged as read-only at some point in the past and have not been updated, in which case those files will rear their ugly head at some point in the future. Your proposed solution will definitely be safer, especially as a preliminary test. However, that approach won't ultimately address any other problem files that might be lurking in the default Pathfinder folder. So both approaches make good sense, with yours probably being best as an initial verification of my theory. After that, @Nikmal can consider my approach to ultimately fix the default Pathfinder folder depending on how concerned he is that other files might exist with the same problem.
