Not sure if this has been addressed or not, but is there a way to track gems without using gear lisitng "Custom Gear"?
 
The "-Custom Valuable-" option is recommended, as opposed to "-Custom Gear-", so that it shows up in your total wealth.

This was helpful. I do wish it was slightly more intuitive to find and use. If money is kept in the Journal section, perhaps so should custom valuables.
