Ensuring Proper Level Buy

When you create a level 16 character at one time, you have to be careful not to pick multiple level 16 rage powers, or evolutions, or whatever that class has that is select able and level defined. One way around this to build the character 1 level at a time, has anyone though about adding some mechanism to keep you from messing this up when you create many levels at one shot?

I hope this makes sense.

I'm afraid implementing this would require rebuilding the way Hero Lab approaches character creation, so that it forces you to complete each level of your character before adding the next level. There are just so many things that can change from level to level that there's no other way to track what combinations of things would have or would not have been valid as the character was built.

What if you put some sort of value in every feat and had a "validate feat selection" menu option or button? For instance if you are level 3 human with 2 flaws, it would make sure you had 4 feats with a value of "1" (or whatever the value for feats available to you at first level would be), and 1 feat with a value of "3" or less? Granted it would be tricky for classes that get bonus feats from class, and classes that can skip prereqs for feats like Rangers, but doesn't seem like you'd have to rebuild the character creation process necessarily. Of course I could be wrong...Just a thought. Even so, it does sounds like a lot of work!

There's not just one or two values that things might need to look up - we need to leave the program open to any prereqs that someone wants to add, and that means that each feat, custom class abilty, etc. needs to be able to look up the state of EVERYTHING about the character at the time it was purchased.

Right I just meant something that would only track feats and if you have too many higher level ones.

I think another solution would be to include the Prereqs in the actual text on all the class abilities and feats. Or maybe do something for feats like spells, and categorize them by level when you add em. Like have a 1st level feat slot, 3rd slot, etc. Probably more work than I realize, but I'm only thinking out loud for fun really. lol.
