Paying to Upgrade Weapon to +1

I already own a masterwork bow but would like to upgrade it to +1. According to the rules this will cost 2000 gp. I'm able to upgrade the bow, however, I can't figure out how to get Hero Lab to account for me paying for it. Is there a way to pay for an upgrade?

Also, while I'm at it, I was wondering if there was a way to control the order that weapons on presented when I print out my character. I'm getting three weapons on page 1 and a few on page 2, but I'd like to make sure that my main weapons are on the first page. Is there a way to do that?

Thank you!

If you go into the Weapons tab of HL you will see that your bow can be edited. Click on the edit button and then add + 1 to it. From there you can add the cost of the item in the gold piece value in the edit area too. set the cost and you will pay that amount.

Hello Nikmal - I'm able to edit the bow to add the +1, however, there's no box in the window where I can specify how much it costs. There's a "Set" button I can click to set the cost of the item to 2630gp (it's a STR+2 darkwood longbow), but there's no where I can establish the price of the upgrade at 2000 gp. When I click the "Set" button nothing seems to happen. My current wealth is 2005 gp, so I'm unable to pay for the entire bow, although I am able to pay for the upgrade, if that might have anything to do with it.

There isn't currently a way to automatically figure the difference between the original and new prices, but it is something I've been keeping in the back of my mind, trying to figure out if there's a way to handle it.

Weapon order is on my to-do list.

What I would suggest then.. delete the item that you are trying to edit and recreate it again. Set eh price you are trying to pay and then set it and pay for it. This is the best solution I can come up with. Others like Mathias might be able to better inform you on this. But yea in buying the masterwork item and then bringing it up to the price you stated is a custom thing that you are going to have to adjust yourself some how. The only way I know is to delete and redo it.

Sorry I could not help more :(

Selling the old one for full price and purchasing the new one for full price is currently the only way to handle this.

Thank you both for your help! I think what I'll do is what you suggested - Delete the bow for full price and then just but a new one for full price.

What I might suggest, Mathias, is a dialog box where you could input a price for any weapon change. If there was a box where I could just enter 2000 gp and submit that would be great.

The weapon order thing would be cool, too, although I believe the Magic, Custom and Masterwork weapons are always on page 1.

Hello Mathias - I just noticed something else a bit strange. When I click on the "edit this weapon" button for the Darkwoord Longbow Composite (Str+2), the total cost at the bottom of the page says 630 gp. When I click "set" that doesn't change. When I then click the (x) to sell the item the total cost is listed as 830 gp. I'll reset it to 630 gp when I sell it, but I'm not sure where that came from.

I looked everywhere for something like that but couldn't find it. How do you adjust your money?
The Journal tab has an area to take game notes and enter any Plus/Minus to gp and to your XP. I found it really nice to put in the notes area what I sold and purchased and then just adjust the final total. This way I have full notes of what I did encase the DM asks. And you can print this information out also which is really nice for the freaks like me that like good book keeping. :)

I've been using the Journal, but wasn't aware of the Notes. I like that feature and will start using it. Thank you for that tip!

I have, however, been using the Journal boxes to update gold and PA. I don't really like that mechanism, however, for keeping track of gold from item sales and upgrades. I prefer the mechanism that's already built in when you delete or buy items. The only thing missing from that is the ability to specify a price when you upgrade an item. The workaround (sell the item for full price and then repurchase the upgraded item) isn't too inconvenient, given that it doesn't happen that often.

I might be a little "old school" on this, but I find that I like it being a tad inconvenient on the money adjustment because it helps avoid mistakes. When you have to work at it, it forces you to think about it - where if things just become quick clicks it gets easy to have the money tracking get away from you. I find having to sell and re-buy or having to go to the journal to adjust forces you to makes sure you are doing with your coins exactly what you intended to do. A lot like the annoying "are you sure you want to delete" prompt. We all hate it, but I'm betting it has saved all of our skins at least once.

I'm not against some sort of improvement, I'm just saying I'm pretty happy with the coins mechanism as is. I'd much rather see something for handling gems added in, or the huge backlog caught up on and then maybe circle back around and look at coins.

Actually, until I get a full mechanism set up for upgrading weapons, the fact that a set button is showing up when you edit an existing weapon is a bug - unless the full set of mechanics are there, none of the mechanics should be seen. So, don't press that set button on an existing item, only one you're in the process of creating for the first time.
