Hero Lab Play & missing source errors

Ambrus

So I finally finished my first character with a bunch of custom additions which seem to work fine on my desktop Hero Lab (Mac, V5.0 #417) and ported it over to Hero Lab Play (v9.0) on my mini iPad but when I try to open my character's portfolio I get an "Errors Encountered" message highlighting all of my created material; mostly with "Critical information not found in data files" and "Pick --- has been orphaned due to missing thing in batch ###" or "Chained pick for --- has been orphaned due to missing bootstrap in batch ###".

How do I get all that missing data to show up in Hero Lab Play?

I don't own an iPad just posting what I've seen posted. I believe there is a help file in the iPad app to tell you how to get things onto it.

Thanks. I found the relevant pages with Andrew's pointers. The import system is a little roundabout, but I got it to work finally. Out of curiosity, would it be possible to simply email the relevant .hl file to myself and open it in Hero Lab Play on the iPad? No need to plug in and go through iTunes that way.

I can confirm that works just fine also. Or dropbox or other cloud tools should also work. But I have used email and most of my players use dropbox.

I'm trying to update my character with a customized spell:'Enlarge Fey' which is merely a modified version of Enlarge Person. I've uploaded the new .hl and .por files to Hero Lab Play on my iPad, but I keep getting the error message "Pick spEnlFey' has been orphaned due to missing thing in batch '745' when I try to open the character. What am I doing wrong?

Did you remember to add the source for the item to the ipad similarly to what you did to use it in hero lab? Hero Lab play does not come preloaded with community or user created content, that has to be added manually by you.

My guess is you didn't include all the user files in the hl file or you didn't load it all the way. When it's loaded it should look like THIS.

Hm. I had to tap on the file name a few times and finally it uploaded "all the way" because now it works fine. All in all, uploading the character, then the data set into the app, then having to go in and tap the file name to further integrate it into the App is rather clunky and less than intuitive system.

Also, do I understand it correctly? When leveling, I have to do so in Hero Lab and then upload my updated character into Hero Lab Play? It's not possible to level the character directly inside Hero Lab Play? Downloading the updated character into Hero Lab Play unfortunately erases all of my Hero Lab Play journal entries. I must be missing some step in the process...

Full version on the Ipad, including character creation and leveling, is in the works. It'll count as one of your licensced devices once it is done. In the meantime though, you've got a handle on it.

The same way you get updated versions of your character sheets from the PC to the iPad should be available in reverse - add your journal entries while playing, move the saved character from the iPad to the desktop, level up, and then move the leveled version back to the iPad.
