I find this totally aggravating!

Ok here are the file names:

PFRPG_The_Modern_Path_MSRD.user
PFRPG_The_Modern_Path_Imperial Age and Thrilling Tales.user
PFRPG_The_Modern_Path_Heroes.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_Shadow_Heroes.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_SGG_Tough.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_SGG_The_Luminary.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_SGG_The_Investigator.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_SGG_The_Daredevil.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_SGG_Enforcer.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_Scrying_Eye_Games.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_MSRD_Core_Classes.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_FG_Sensitive.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_d20_Modern_Arcana.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_Classic_Heroes.user
PFRPG_Modern_Path_Blood and Brains - The Zombie Hunter's Guide.user

They should be in this file: C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder
but whatever file they end up at, delete these and any other modern file.

Frodie, that looks like a list of .user files. Are there any .1st files for the Modern Path material? I think Takeda's problem is that he's deleted all those .user files, but there are still .1st files hanging around causing problems.

I haven't include a .1st file for some time now. If I remember correctly it was modern.1st, but me look in an old upload and see if I can find the name.

Got it!

PFRPG_ModernSources.1st

Search and delete that file. All should be back to good then. I hope.

Hey Mathias, in the future, if I include a blank PFRPG_ModernSources.1st file. Will it automatically delete itself, like a blank .user file?

Well hopefully that is it. I have to run for a bit, I'll check back in about an hour to make sure everything is cool. Again sorry for all the headaches.

I've gone through everything and deleted everything I could find in Program Data and Program Files that was 'Modern' ... still get this when I try to fire it up:

The data files could not be loaded due to errors. Hero Lab will now attempt to load them in recovery mode. Once loaded, you can access the editor as normal to correct any errors.

The following errors occurred:

Source 'Modern' - Reference to non-existent parent source 'ModPath'.

Sorry, wife had to work late. Did you get the PFRPG_ModernSources.1st file?

Ok, there must be a stray modern file in there some where.

The only way you would get that error if there was a modern file, somewhere within that file.

Oh, there used to be a Future file.

These are some old MSRD files names:

PFRPG_Modern_Core.user
PFRPG_Modern_Future.user
PFRPG_Modern_Gear.user
PFRPG_Modern_Optional.user
PFRPG_Modern_Urban_Arcana.user
PFRPG_Modern_PSI.user

See if you have any of them.

I ran a search on the root Hero Lab folder in Program Data and Program Files and deleted any file that had 'modern' in the name. Still gave me that error.

Sometimes a search will miss something. Can you sort the folder by file type and see what user files you have in there?

Also, this shouldn't have anything to do with it, but also delete the GRC.hl
C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\download

That really shouldn't have anything to do with the load error, but you never know.

Any luck dude?

Also, check here:

C:\Users\Kev\Documents\Hero Lab - importbackup

Well yours will not have my name "Kev".

Source 'Modern' - Reference to non-existent parent source 'ModPath
Download and install a tool like "FileSeek" that lets you search flat files for specific text. I personally use TextPad but whatever tool makes you happy.

Then search for "ModPath" and find out which file is referencing it. I am thinking its in something other than a .1st file. Once you find the file should be easy enough to move the file out of the directory and start HL up again. :)

Nope ... nothing. I've gone through all the folders from Hero Lab ProgramFiles and ProgramData by hand ... and their sub-folders ... nothing.

So any other suggestions on how to eliminate "Source 'Modern' - Reference to non-existent parent source 'ModPath'"?

Trying this Fileseek thing now. I'm beyond frustrated ... but I appreciate all your advice/assistance.

Okay it looks like it's working ... no error and I have my User files back.

Thank you all for your time!

Sorry dude, I had to crash last night. Thank you ShadowChemosh for staying up and helping. I would have never found that file in "herolab.prefs".

Anyways I am very glad it's fixed and very sorry. I never ran into this issue. I'll look and see what I need to do to prevent it.

FYI - I just check my "herolab.prefs" file and wow! There is all kinds of crazy stuff. Seem like everything you ever added is marked on there. I never messed with it, so I not sure the correct way to edit it or prevent it.
