I find this totally aggravating!

So often with these 3rd party bits for Pathfinder it causes a conflict where all of my User Content won't work ... sources that don't link up and stuff.... There's got to be another way to do this where our User stuff isn't affected by stuff offered from the Hero Lab updates ...

Giving the proviso saying save everything is all fine and good but if I later remove the the 3rd party stuff the damn tendrils are still everywhere and I spend 3+ hours unravelling all the damage ... if I'm lucky. It's usually the Modern Path stuff ... now I have an orphaned Modern Source Path and I can't do a darned thing about it ... over my head.

Isn't there some way we could have a roll-back option? I ran the update this morning and then everything that worked Yesterday doesn't and I can't go back ... now I'm spending hours ...

So maybe someone knows a way I can backup my entire Hero Lab library in a way where I can keep it safe from any 'updates' that I can do a clean sweep and just put it all back into place I'd love to hear it. I can't just uninstall Hero Lab because then I lose everything ... and how to know what to archive and how to do it so I can just restore without spending hours putting it all back together again.

Have 2 or 3 duplicates of your HeroLab Pathfinder system. For example, I have:
1 "with everything"
1 with Specific campaign stuff
1 bare-bones, restricted to official stuff
1 bare-bones for PFS, with with useful Adjustments/add-ons tacked on.

That should help a bit.

So are you doing that by Duplicating the System or am I missing something?

Tools -> Manage Third Party Updates -> would let you remove the one you think is causing issues. It will also give you a full list of all the files it installed.

I don't know if their is a "auto-magical" way of doing the roll back but "HL" does save a total backup copy before it does each install. If you go to "data\pathfinder\importbackup" you can find the full copy of HL including all your .user files as it was before the install happened.

If you feel comfortable doing it you could move out all the data files to a backup folder and then copy everything from the importbackup folder back into the normal location. Make sure HL is NOT running when you did this.

Correct one way to make sure you have a 100% clean install is to run the Installer again for Pathfinder. You can go to ProgramData\HeroLab\Downloads\pathfinder.hl. Run that and you get the import screen again. But this time look near the bottom of the install window and you will see a button for "FOLDER FOR GAME SYSTEM". You can give it a new name like "PathfinderModern" or something and it will install HL fresh with a clean install in this new folder.

Here is a POST that can give some more info.

I did the Manage Third Party Updates and removed the offending article but some of the errors persisted like the orphaned Modern Path Source.

I'll try the trick with data\pathfinder\importbackup the next time ... as it is I've gone to far into trying to get the Modern Path Source Path orphaned error to get any help from the backup ... (I'd imagine) ... hmm, I'll try it I guess.

Orphaned sources are warnings, not errors, and they're particular to specific saved characters who were created back when you did have that option installed - Hero Lab is warning you that because you no longer have that data installed, there might be trouble if you had built your character with those options.

ShadowChemosh ... tried that and I got this:

The data files could not be loaded due to errors. Hero Lab will now attempt to load them in recovery mode. Once load, you can access the editor as normal to correct any errors.

The following errors occurred:

Source 'Modern' - Reference to non-existent parent source 'ModPath

So none of my User files will load ... so I'm totally screwed until I can figure out how to solve this.

It kinda feels like a program that installs a .dll that even when removed has linked up to other .dll files and butchers them ... like it's not a clean install so it won't cleanly uninstall. I've seen this happen with the Modern stuff a few times so I'm just not going to install it anymore ... once I have this sorted out. ... assuming I can do that.

Well if I used/referenced any of the modern stuff in any of my user data it was purely by accident ... <sigh>

You can clear those warnings by changing something about that saved character (like adding and deleting a space in the name), and then re-saving. You may also need to use the "Strip Missing Sources" option from the Portfolio menu in some cases, and save after doing that.

This sounds like its coming from a .1st file that somehow didn't get removed. Unfortunately you will have to fix this by hand but its pretty easy. Go into your ProgramData\HeroLab\data\Pathfinder folder and look for any .1st files (ie files that end with .1st).

This is where it gets fun as you have to figure out which one is for the modern data set and which ones are for the other community stuff you may have installed. Hopefully it has a name like "Mod" or "Modern" in its name. If not you can either try doing a move (don't delete just Move it out) of the directory and start HL and see if the above message goes away.

Or two you could paste the names here of all .1st files you find (should not be that many) and I can try and give you hand of figuring out which one is which.

How do I find a file that has a Modern fragment though? I've got like 90+ characters ... do I have to go over all of them so I can use my user files?

JBE_General.1st
JBE_Shadowsfall.1st
PFRPG_3PP_Sources.1st
PFRPG_ARG_RaceBuilder.1st
PFRPG_Bestiary_Sources.1st

I'm guessing the last 3 are AOK but I included them just in case.

I'm unable to use any of my user files with no portfolio loaded ... so there's nothing to strip (it's greyed out).

Sorry, I was out this afternoon. Sorry about this, it seems the old MSRD files keep messing things up. I need not to include them until I can re-idtag all the old files.

Anyways, like ShadowChemosh said, go to ProgramData\HeroLab\data\Pathfinder
Delete any modern .user and .1st file, (anything with modern in the file name). I don't use the .1st file anymore in the hopes in avoiding this problem. But of course it didn't.

I have attached the same files as the new update, but as a zip file. Once you deleted any old modern file, unzip the new files in the same folder.

I check these files with only the core rules and with every source including all the user files I could find, with no error. So hopefully it should all be good. Hopefully....

I can't find any files either .user or 1st that appear to be 'Modern' so I don't know where to go from here?!
