XML output?

Hi. I was wondering if the Hero Lab outputs to XML? I'm wondering because I have a Hero Engine project I should be working on. :D

One of the import routes for code is XML. If Hero Lab can output this way, then I'm dandy and will be buying the software license. If not, then I will probably go the D20 pro route even though I can't receive commercial revenue this way.

You can try the software out in Demo mode. You just can't print or save a character but everything else is fully functional.

To get XML output you can go to File->Save file output and then pick RAW XML at the bottom of the list. I am not near HL but I am pretty sure those are the menu choice names. :)

XML Output is pretty good

Ee... I'm not certain if the demo mode exports anything. I seem to recall it's all locked up tight, not even allowing printing. That said, the XML export function does work rather comprehensively, almost too much so. I've attached an example from Mutants and Masterminds with various constructs in it. You can see how many things are present, but buried a few layers below the surface.

If you decide to take the programming route, I have a crude C# library available here for reading in XML and roughing out class structures.

I had specified I was going to buy the software if it did output to XML. Someone said it did, so I bought the full version of "Authoring Kit."

Oh. That comes with Savage Worlds, and 4E if you have a DDI (I think that's the right name) Downloader license, but it's primarily for if you want to implement your own system. If you want to use one of the extant license (other than the above), you're better off getting them directly. If that's the case, fortunately Lone Wolf has very good customer support for such things.

:) I hope the XML output works nicely for you.

You may have selected the wrong game system for your needs. The XML output is provided for each of the various game systems. Which game system are you playing for which you want to use Hero Lab's output?

If you *did* select the wrong initial core package, that can be changed. You can send an email to support@wolflair.com and explain that you selected the wrong starting package and want to change it. Be sure to provide your order number and the correct game system you want. The swap-out can be handled pretty quickly by our support person.

Yes. Hopefully I can get a viable character building solution for Hero Engine.

Would it be a first? Having a D&D 3.5 ruleset MMO?

EDIT: I would still be able to do custom races/ skills if I use the 3.5 license?

I want to be in full compliance with the Open Game License set forth by Wizards of the Coast....

Does this mean I really need the 3.5 ruleset?

Unless you want to re-implement everything from scratch, you're probably better off using the d20 System 3.5 data files.

Yes, you definitely can create your own custom races and other content using the built-in Editor for the 3.5 content. There's a large body of fan-created work already in existence for 3.5. I recommend you check on the forums for that material.
