Wish List Items - Gods & Homeland

Well-known member
All,

I just saw the new posts for Pathfinder plans. Overall it looks great.

I do have a couple of "Wish List" items for the "To Do" list.

1. Would it be possible to add a drop down choice where the Deity section is that would hold all of the Golarion and racial gods?

2. Would it be possible to add a drop down choice for a Homeland field similar in format to the Bakcground/Faction settings?

These are future item requests, as getting the items you listed in the sticky above much higher on the want list. :)

Gods should be in shortly. We had to wait on those until after the license was signed, since those are not OGL.

Mathias will need to comment on the Homeland request.

The "Use Factions/Backgrounds" optional rule was intended to be able to cover things like Homelands - expanding the Faction selector beyond just the Pathfinder Society Factions.

The Faction tab in the editor will allow you to add new options for that list.

Cool. I was entering factions from the Faction Guide there and was hoping to have a Faction tab and a Homeland tab. That way they can join one of the actual factions in play and keep it separate from homeland. But I can make them work as a single selector.

Thanks for the feedback, and good to hear about the gods choice.

Are either factions or homelands exclusive - can you have only one of each?

Is it impossible to write a backstory that will get you the benefits of more than one homeland or more than one faction?

In my opinion, that sort of thing is too flexible to be represented by fixed choices within Hero Lab. I'd personally rather use the background tab or a Word document to discuss homeland and faction affiliation for my character, rather than tying them to specific picks in Hero Lab.

That is true. But there are feats and traits that require a specific region or faction to be able to select them.

For example I have added the Hellknight faction from the faction guide.

If you are from Cheliax you could select that at character creation. This would allow you to take the trait Devil's Mark. If you later joined the Hellknights and then wanted to take the the feat Ominous Mien you could. (That feat requires a PC to be a member of the Hellknights before the feat can be selected.)

I had coded the new feat just like the trait so that both of those items would be grayed out unless the proper faction was selected. I then realized I would make it so a player could not pick both.

You are correct that this can be tracked in the text of the journal. I can also set up the feats so they verbally warn, within the feat text, the player not to select the feat unless they are a member of the correct faction or homeland. I do not need to make it so they gray out and create a validation error.

Again, this is not a make or break deal in any way... just a nice to have. I agree that there could be MANY ways this could go. But I thought, perhaps naively, that a single Homeland and single Faction drop down would be a feature others may like.

(I have added to the faction choice all of the regions from the campaign guide book and all of the factions from the faction guide... about 75 or so of them. So that is what led me to the idea that there really was two choices for common PCs)

So thanks for the feedback, and whatever works best for you guys is fine. I like what I have so far and look forward to how you bring in the new Golarion specifics going forward! :D

I also haven't read the faction guide yet, and there's the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: World Guide / Player Companion: Inner Sea Primer coming down the pipeline. If those have specific rules for what's required in terms of joining factions or homeland affiliation, those will of course be implemented when those books are made available for HL.

I'm just worried about what happens if a character comes up with a background/in-game events that allows them to take the Ominous Mien feat without being an official member of the Hellknights, or breaks ties with the Hellknights after gaining that feat - we have to be able to handle those situations, too.

It would be nice to be able to pick multible Factions. I use the faction function to support Affiliations. You could easily be a member of multible Affilations.

If the option to add multiple factions were added, I think only the very top one would need to be spelled out at the top as part of the main character info. The others could be listed in the personal or background section when printed.

Faction Guide

Adding my voice to the chorus looking for this kind of functionality.

The Faction Guide presents the ability to create additional Factions as needed.

The trick is tracking Prestige Awards, Current Prestige, and Total Prestige per faction when the characters can be members of more than one simultaneously.

Perhaps it might be wise to separate Factions for PFS use from a more general implementation of Factions from the Faction Guide? When using the Faction Guide, a tab for Factions with the Current and Total Prestige Awards for each would be appropriate.

Alternatively, could this be a tie-in from Hero Lab to the Realm Manager product in development?

I honestly, want to be able to select my Homeland and also have it add that homeland's language into my default language (which is possible), however I fear that by adding it into the factions, that it'll also show up when creating a PFS character. I'm afraid that while creating a PFS character, I'll forget that Ulfden is not a valid faction and choose it accidentally. Is there a way to make the Factions option show up when creating a regular character and display the homelands options and if the Society Content is checkmarked, have it ONLY display the factions from PFS?

Previously, I just created a whole mess of races for each different human race (which sorta made my race screen explode) and had the additional languages auto-add when that race is selected (for instance if I selected "Human (Ulfden)" Skald would be automatically added as a default language). Should I just continue to do this now that the Golarian languages are part of herolabs are built in or is there a way to do what i want in factions?

There is an "Allowed for PFS" check mark box on almost screen in the editor. So for other factions, just make sure you do not check that box and then when making a PFS character you should only see the main five.

I bootstrapped the languages to additional races just like you did. I am sure you can add it to a faction as well, but it would have to be an actual bootstrap and not a check box like it is with races.

I have not double checked specifically for Factions, but I thought all Things in the editor had a check box to select if something is NOT valid for PFS. So if this is the case for Factions you could just mark your custom factions as NOT PFS allowed so they don't show up for your PFS characters.

Yeah, I found the check box, however another weird error has popped up. I now have all the Ethnicities entered in and they show up under Backgrounds/Factions if you have "Enable Backgrounds/Factions" enabled, however for some strange reason, Skald and Hallit no longer appear on the language list. I even tried removing the .user file I had the Ethnicities in to see if I broke something when I made it add in the Ancient Azlant, Tien, and Vudrani languages, but they're still missing. Strangely enough, though, if I use the editor to create bootstraps to add languages, Skald and Hallit are still listed as though they exist. Thoughts?

UPDATE:
After some trial and error, the languages of Hallit and Skald, for some reason, seem to be tied to the Kingmaker Adventure Path only. Without it selected, they don't appear.

Is there some way to edit that so that they appear if the Golarian Languages option is selected instead?

I've got this fixed for the next update.

I've got this fixed for the next update.

Sweet! Thanks. Will Tien, Ancient Azlant, and Vudrani Languages be included in the Golarian option as well?

Otherwise, I've got the entire .user file finished. It contains all Ethnicities of Humans under the Factions tab (they won't show up if you're creating a PFS character), they'll auto-give the regional language, and under the Factions Dialog, I've got descriptions of the regions, favoured Deities and Regions, and common names of the ethnicity. The only question is whether it should be limited to Humans only or if it should also include Half-Orc and Half-Elf?

While I understand that they're Human Ethnicities, if someone's Dad is an Elf and their mom is a Vudrani woman, wouldn't they inherit some of their ethnic physical traits, as well as probably be tought their language?

This is just one of those questions my friends and I have been mulling over as well as the question of Half-What? where we're asking if it's possible to be Half-Orc and Half-Elf (or, more ridiculously, Half-Orc and Half-Halfling/Gnome). That's a homebrew situation there, obviously, since it'd involve strange stats, etc... but the original Vudrani Half-Elf question is still pretty valid.

Proper handling for the languages is waiting for the World Guide - Inner Sea that's due out next February.

Our gaming group had a bit of a break over the last week or two and so I just now got around to patching Hero lab with the latest. And I just wanted to say thanks! The breakout of spells, adjustments, and conditions is great! I also want to say thank you for getting both the gods and factions into the program exactly like on my wish list.

One thing I would like to comment on is how great your support is for the game system. I made a lot of minor changes to the game by adding my own factions, gods, feats, traits, combat adjustments, languages etc. And now the biggest thing I have to change whenever you patch is to go in a remove things I added in the past that you have now incorporated into the core game. I still have my own data file with my mods to the program... but you are rapidly adding a lot of things that I had put in... and in almost every case you do it in a way that is equal to or better then the version I had. (Go figure... the pros do a better job then some random dude on the internet... who would have thunk it. )

So keep up the good work, and whatever the legal stuff you had to work our with Paizo to use world specific items is worth it for the improvement to your product IMHO.
