I considered MaxSupernova's use, but there's a Status dropdown or somesuch in the topic that I can just add a "Deceased" tag to, which works better for me.
I do it exactly opposite of Pollution. Prefix is for map key (so it sorts correctly) and suffix is for Book/Adventure/whatever.
Example: 334 - Inky Chamber - ToEE

Curious... What would be the purpose to suffix them that way? I can see retaining the NPC for back history, plot ties, etc. but I would simply flag their demise within the stat block, POR, or maybe even dates (born / Died)I use suffix to mark NPCs as DECEASED when appropriate.
I do the SameI use it to disambiguate Topics/Articles with the same name.
I do this as well, but mainly as it relates to "subsets" so to speak. I might have a knightly order, but differing organizations within that.I use prefix in connection with groups.

I think there is a tag for that in the user profile, it would be very easy to filter on that instead of using the suffix
