Web Seminars on Data File Authoring

Colen and I have been discussing the idea of hosting semi-regular web seminars that explore the ins and outs of authoring data files. The seminars would each have a primary theme, with some focused on adding content to existing game systems and others on developing new data files from scratch with the Authoring Kit. The idea is to start each seminar with some specific techniques and then open it up for questions, allowing it to go where you guys want. Seminars would nominally run about 1-1.5 hours in length.

How would this work? We have a WebEx account that we can use for this purpose. I believe the maximum number of participants in an online meeting is 25 attendees, but that ought to be fine. Since WebEx has a playback option, we'll also look into recording the seminars for later viewing by those who can't attend the seminars.

So now come the questions for you guys....

1. How many of you would be interested in this?

2. What topics would you most want to see us cover?

3. What days and times would be the best for holding the seminars to maximize participation? Remember that we've got folks in a wide range of timezones, so be sure to specify your timezone when making your suggestions.

4. What details have I *not* mentioned here that you feel are important?

Please share your thoughts on this idea. If there's sufficient interest, we'd like to start the seminars in the next few weeks.

I would like to be interested. I would like to see topics on authoring data files, and the mechanics of XML. For me evenings would be better and weekends, but that being said I understand that we all have lives. For me best time would be Sunday evening say around 7 or 8 pm EST (GMT -5) NW Ohio, USA. Otherwise week days I would attempt to make again after 8 pm (see above time zone). Most Saturdays are shot for me but if something big was happening on that day I would do what I could to be involved, mornings being better for Sat.

Yes please. I'm working on some stuff and came across some questions, if I could pick your brains...metaphorically speaking...that might answer my questions.

Please remember that we're also happy to answer questions here on these forums. You don't have to wait until a seminar.

would these be ble to be downloaded as a video podcast afterwards? it would be a great resource if so.

That is the plan, although we haven't verified this is possible yet. As I mentioned in the original post, WebEx has a playback option that we hope to use to record the seminar for subsequent viewing.

Did this get off the ground?
I think the life of electronic gaming assistance is in the ease of use and content.
I would be happy to get this kind of thing produced. I just need an experienced contributor to work with.
I have years of professional experience with eLearning, technical writing and programming. I talked with Colen about this a GEN CON and he seemed open to the idea.

I dont think anything has been done with it yet.

But to spoil a surprise, i have been working on getting a youtube account and playing with some video capture software. My hope is to provide some short demos of how to create usr files and how to use HL. It might be a few weeks before i can start to publish anything though, and even then i dont expect a huge flood of videos coming out all at once.

That would be nice. I think an overview of the object model would go a long long ways to assisting those of us struggling with adding missing data to mods.

Anything that can help me get a handle on how to add stuff to HL would be fantastic. Heck I'd probably even pay for it. The ability to download and reference it repeatedly would be gravy.

In the case this actually starts happening I am in EST, west FL peninsula, and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays in the evenings around 7pm would be best for me. I honestly would make any day and time work, so long as it does not interfere with real work, if it meant learning my way around the HL authoring kit.

I'm looking at starting something up in sept. Work is a real bear at the moment. the first few will be test ones, fast and small projects. i need to find a way to collect questions so that we can look at them and try to do some of them rhrough the video.

i spent a good part of my evening last night figuring out how to create the video and i think i have the process down faily well now, so look for a test one by the end of the weekend. (i hope)

I am going to focus on pathfinder since i think it is the largest game system being used at the moment. if anyone else would like to do a video for a different game system, i would be happy to post it to the youtube channel i created. thanks.

I'm all for this idea!

The best times for me would be any weekday evening between 6-11PM CST (except Wed. -- that's my game night *g*), or just about any time on the weekends.

Topic-wise, I'd most like to see a focus on data file creation & especially scripting, but I'm sure I'd benefit from whatever you were willing to put up there. I've worked with WebEx seminars at work, and I can tell you having the recorded sessions available for later reference has been invaluable, so I hope you'll be able to work something out in that regard as well.

Chief W.,
I would like to work with you in developing the videos.
I hope that together we can produce some awesome content.

that would be great as i am a rank amatur by all definitions of the term. send me a private message with your email address and we can go from there. with luck i intend to do the first few tonight. they will just show how to do some basic things in HL, like assign gold to a NPC, things like that.
