Vessels/Ships Organization Best Practice?

Mettius

Moving along from my question in http://forums.wolflair.com/showthread.php?p=248289#post248289, what about the Ship itself?

In this case "Ship of Fools". It's a large vessel, with many rooms and compartments. Is it a Place or a Thing?
If it is a Thing, well, it has different rooms in which adventure can happen and things need to be tracked. The brig, the galley, the loo, storage closets, cargo holds, state rooms. How best to represent these "places"?

Or is it a Thing and relationships are used to the "places" it contains? :confused:

Cheers,

Not sure what is better as the root Topic, but in this case I do not recommend using relationships. Use containment something like -

Ship (lets go with a Thing)
--> brig (Place-> Location)
--> galley (Place -> Location)
------> Cook (People-> Individual) he is important enough to have his own topic, but not so important as to care for him outside of the ship)

The ship itself is a thing.
However all the locations and the adventure make it an adventure area.
I tend to skip Location categories and use a Scene for each location in which something might occur.

There is no need to choose only ONE.

For some purposes, the ship is a Thing.. or a Named Vehicle (if the structure supports such). For other purposes, it is an Adventure Area. You can create both, to track the information for each use in the appropriate Topic.

I had to set up ships for my Star Without Number Realm and did it the way Avi did.

One thing you need to know is is the ship just going to be used just once or is it going to be in multiple adventures.

If the latter I would just keep the location info to cover stuff that is applicable all the time. And in a separate topic list any changes that are going to occur in a specific adventure or scene. Depending on how many changes occur you may just want to make one topic if only a few of the previous descriptions need to be altered for some reason or indicate something like a NPC location just for that scene or adventure.

Not sure why a ship is not a location. Just because it moves, so what? After all, planets move too and therefore so does everything that is allocation on the planet
