Using HL with a portable HD drive

I am a DM who runs games in several different places. Mostly in office spaces with full access to internet but with a really hard IT policy so it is not possible to install the SW on each of the machines I use. So far, we have been using the app from Wizards of the Coast, but when that went online, and this company do not allow Silverlight, that makes it all fall completely. Also, laptops is off limits, but for some strange reason, portable HDD, USB memory sticks and smartphones are not, and they have not locked down the USB ports, so....

OK, so my burning question is:

Can I install the SW and primary license on my portable HDD and then use it on each of the needed locations where i set up my game for the evening?

If the answer is No: Why no, and can I fix so it is possible?

Thanks in advance,

What constitutes "a computer"?

The licensing allows me to install Hero Lab on one computer.

I want to install the SW on a portable HDD wich I then can take with me and connect to other systems to run my game. Nothing will be left on the 'guest system' as a result of this, so from a certain point of view, I am still using the program on a single system, correct?

Before purchasing I want to know if there are any hindrances to this?

Based on the way our licensing works, I don't think this is possible. Each license is tied to the characteristics of a specific computer, so you can't move the product around between different computers.

The only way this MIGHT work for your situation is if you are able to reliably run Hero Lab on the SAME one or two computers at the site. If you do that, then I'm pretty sure you can install Hero Lab into a separate folder on the portable drive for each computer and activate a separate license for each of those computers. When you return to the known computer each game, it's "identity" will be the same as far as Hero Lab is concerned, so the activated license should continue to work fine. However, this approach assumes that (a) you install Hero Lab into a separate folder on the drive for each computer, (b) you activate a separate license for each computer, (c) the identify of those computers remains consistent over a period of months.

Sorry I don't have better news for you on this. You're trying to utilize the product in an very non-standard way, and our licensing technology simply isn't designed to handle your particular situation. :(

I have HL on my desktop and I leave it on and remote in to it so any laptop can remote control my home comp while away. There are tons of software options for this.

Good idea, Kilroy. Since I read in the original post that Mixxathon is using this in an office environment, I will point out that this may be in violation of the company IT policy. Check with whoever is in charge of that before to see if it's allowed, and what accommodations may be necessary.

Thanks for the replies

Yes, I know my situation is kind of unique :P

Anyway, I had not thought of the possibility to use remote control. We have RealVNC installed as a standard, and that will actually make this work just fine. I will run the application on my own workstation but will be able to use it from anywhere in the world - and it will not break any licensing since it is de facto only installed on a single system.

Brilliant! Thanks! Now I am off to order the software :)
