It might not be legal, depending on how you interpret the word 'item' -
"You may not take duplicate items for the same model", says the rules.
Also, The effect of having (for example) 2 Bolt Pistols or 2 Braziers is
exactly the same as taking one Bolt Pistol / Brazier and a Close Combat
Weapon, and often cheaper.

Well, As I read it, it is legal to take two single handed weapons, with no restrictions to the type of weapons.
I don't have the Codex, e.g. for Vanilla Space Marine, with me right now, but AFAIR the section about having "2 singled handed weapons OR one two handed and one single handed weapon" is followd by a sentence allowing a model to take up to 100 point of wargear, which is then followed by the "You may not take duplicate items" rules. I read this as: you may not take two identical wargear items, but you may take two identical single handed weapons.
"Why would anyone take, say two bolt pistols, as you can only use (shoot) one of 'em", you might ask?
Well, I might have a cool looking, converted model armed with just that.
If it is legal, as I think it is, it sould also be selectable in AB. Right now what I do is to take one bolt pistol as a bolt pistol and then use the other as a 'close combat weapon'.
Same price, same effect but wrong label.
