Is there a way to select class and background gear when creating a character? Ideally without having to add the value of gold to buy each item separately.
 
None that I know of. You can buy stuff like Dungeoneer's Packs and such as a single item that then grants the whole set of stuff, but no overall packages for each class and each background. Considering each involves a bit of choice, I don't know how you'd implement it easily.

When buying items, though, you can check a box to buy them for free. That choice will carry over into your next purchases until you uncheck the box. So you shouldn't have to add a bunch of gold to do this either way.
