Stances and Maneuvers

As a general question...how would the folks on the boards classify, and add to HL, the stances and maneuvers that appear in Tome of Battle? Spells? Special abilities? Or something entirely diffrent, and if so what?

(this is what comes of playing in a group that has access to pretty much all the printed books from WotC)

Colen and I had discussed this at one point, but I can't remember the specifics. We'll have to discuss this and get back to you.

*nod* That'd be GREAT, getting an 'official' sort of comment. I was mostly out for a 'general people of the boards' thing, might give me ideas.

The "Tome of Battle" is the Book of Nine Swords, right?

When Rob and I discussed this, we came to the conclusion that
maneuvers were a lot like spells, but you could reset the ones you
knew more often - by taking a few minutes to meditate instead of
having to wait for the next day. IIRC we figured they could be
managed pretty much like Sorcerer spells. Does that make sense?

*nod* That's the one, yes. And that is sort of what I was thinking. Stances being level 0, and maneuvers being level 1 spells or something similar, and then make them Sorcerer-type spells.

*grmble* This is a pest. Stances and Maneuvers aren't the same thing as spells, but they exist as level 1 through 9 things SIMILAR to spells. Nor are they the same thing as each other. So, since you get to have diffrent amounts of one and the other, and they're ALSO diffrent levels...almost as if you got to have cleric AND wizard spells, at the same time.

Anyone have any thought on how to solve this?

We leave for a tradeshow in less than 12 hours. This looks like it's going to require some investigation and/or discussion between Colen and myself. If we can, we'll try to discuss while at the show. Otherwise, we won't be able to get to it until we return, which isn't until next weekend. If you don't hear from us by early next week, ping us again about this.

Thanks for your patience!!!

Stances should be treated as 'custom abilities' for each class. For
example, the Swordsage gets new stances at 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, etc
levels. These should be treated just like Rogue custom abilities
(except you get them at earlier levels). So on the Swordsage tab,
you'd have a table showing all the Stances you knew.

Maneuvers should be treated as spells. They go from levels 1 to 9,
and they have similar mechanics to a Wizard's spells - there are X
spells available, of which you know Y [in your spellbook], and you
can ready [memorize] Z of them at any one time.

Hope this helps,

*nod* It does. I've honestly been avoiding HL lately, too many other things to make me pull my hair...but this does help. Maybe I can get back into it.
