M&M 2nd ed. Spending Wealth?

I'm pretty new to M&M, and I have a second edition book so that's what I picked up for HL, and I'm a bit confused about Wealth. It has you "spending" Wealth, and you have to tell it how much Wealth you spent on something. That doesn't seem to be how it works at all in the rules, unless I've missed some errata.

Wealth seems to just use a check, and if you make it, you can purchase the item. The only time it goes down is if you buy something greater than your current Wealth.
 
I'm looking at the wealth rules, and I see nothing about "spending" Wealth. I'm not near my Hero Lab install. Does it have text involving "spending" Wealth?
 
It was on the Equipment tab. When trying to add equipment, you have an option for "wealth spent". Not sure what that is for.

Huh. And an option over in the Journal tab. Never noticed that before. I think it's for easy changes in wealth no matter what system your GM uses.
