Spells and Other Core Rules

I'm just curious: Are you folks entering spells and other core rules (feats/classes/skills/etc) into realm works?

Or just world and adventure details?

Some are and some are not.

I am waiting to see what will be available in the Repository and Marketplace. I expect that there will be official packages for several game systems, and I would prefer to wait and see what those look like before creating my own versions. If I don't like them, I can always make my own; if I do like them, I would want to ensure that my home-brew additions match the formatting and layout of the official packages so they work together smoothly.

For the same reasons, I am limiting world information entered (for published worlds, anyway). I expect that, if all goes well, there will be data packages available for the world settings, and the adventures eventually.

If I waited for everything, I'd be entering nothing and not using RealmWorks at all, so that's not an option. For now, entering the adventure information and the minimum required World information is my approach.

I'm entering anything and everything, just the opposite of Silveras, but that's because I play RuneQuest 6 in the world of Glorantha, and as much as I'd love to have RW officially back it, I don't see it happening.

I'm entering everything as I go. Mostly this is because I am going to be playing the game long before LW publishes materials for it. I am, currently, preping a savage worlds horror game and am not expecting any support for SW from LW for a while yet. I imagine Pathfinder will get the most immediate support.

For my Pathfinder realm, I am putting in no rules information as I want to see the official release. For my ICONS realm, I'm putting in rules and campaign information. Same with Twilight 2000.

For my Pathfinder Realm, I'm making hyperlinks to the the Pathfinder Reference Docs. I was copying each spell into its own article at first and then decided it was just easier to link it.

If it helps any I set up one of the fairly popular settings in Realm Works during Beta that I've given over to LWD to work with Pinnacle on deciding if they like and/or want to sell it on the Marketplace. I've told them I'm not interested in any compensation (and I really just did cut-and-paste and organizational grunt work anyway) but that I do want to encourage seeing Pinnacle products in Realm Works.

The setting is complete but since I know they are working on various settings now themselves they may need to change the format or other things I've done before they decide to make it available, but all of the main grunt work should be complete. So if both companies like what they see then hopefully we will have at least one Savage Worlds setting available relatively soon. (I don't want to say more since I don't know what agreements either company has in place or even if they definitely want to use what I've done, for that matter.)

Just to illustrate another of many uses, in my Mechanics Reference I have:

* Various articles and other information on the art of GMing itself.
* House Rules
* Monsters, Spells and other contents not in the core books I use (usually found on the web)
* GM 'Rulings' - situations where I've decreed things are different than the core rule books

I do something similar myself with the Mechanics section... putting in 3PP material from sources that would never get in otherwise.

Also add a "HOUSE RULE" snippet under anything that has been house rule'd in the past.

Hi there!

Well I'm no expert but, isn't typing core rules / text passages from books into realm works and making it available to public (especially with compensation!) putting the author at risk for being sued for copyright infringment? All the rights to publishment lie within the companies who are selling the books & rules and if no "own intellectual" property was being created it could cause problems.

E.g unproblematic is referencing to books or summarizing with own words, problematic could be copying entire tables / numbers / rules from the books and making them available. At least that it is how it works here.

So best to check local laws / rules to be sure get permission from the distributor / company.

PS - I am not a relam works user yet and still thinking about buying it so I dontknow exactly how the repository / market looks like.

Copy Right law is probably something LWD is going to have to enforce or try to enforce. However, not everything in a game system is copyrightable. Dice Mechanics are not copyrightable. Unique names and the exact wording of the text is copyrightable as far as I know. However, paraphrasing of the text or referencing with book name, page numbers and paragraph on the page probably isn't.

Most of these things won't be a consideration though until the Player version of Realm Works comes out and the Repository is brought online. I expect LWD to attempt to license as many game systems as possible for three reasons.

1. Eliminate the threat of Copyright infringement.
2. Make some money selling access to copyrighted materials.
3. Reduce the size of the database by providing links (instead of copies) to each rule set in their master database. (copies from the master database to your local machine for offline use should be possible, but it will probably be flagged in some way to prevent copying back up to LWD's master database.)

Let's not forget that LWD already has agreements with several game companies for their game systems through Hero Lab. So, I expect some of that to show up over here.

There are a couple of caveats though. With the probable linking of Hero Lab into Realm Works down the road, I expect LWD will eventually develop their own Virtual Table Top and Game Day Management system that will also seamlessly connect Hero Lab, Realm Works, and whatever they call their VTT. That way they will have a Character Management System, Campaign/Adventure Management System, and finally a Game Play Management System with VTT capabilities for online gaming with friends that have moved away from you.

Acenoid: None of us really know how the marketplace will look just yet, it's still in the works. That being said I'm quite certain LWD will be fairly vigilant in trying to watch out for copyright infringing works that are made public, or especially those set for sale. I know in my case I've done one sourcebook but with the knowledge of both LWD and Pinnacle that I was doing it and with the understanding that the only thing I was doing was the grunt copying and organization work getting it into Realm Works, but that otherwise I wanted them to have that realm to see if they wanted to make it available for Pinnacle to sell (not to me to do so at all.) There are a few other threads here as well discussing a lot of those issues, but I trust that LoneWolf will be implementing measures to help ensure published materials stay in the hands of the appropriate copyright holders.

Just a minor (or not so minor) point:

As a rule, most gaming publications are ok with you sharing the content with your own player group so if you have it in your Realm and you do NOT publish it out as a work to share with others, then you're probably just fine. It would be no different than transcribing it into word (if it was hard copy) and printing it out or just printing portions of the PDF if that's how you bought it.
