Note from the marketing guy:

If you want to see this figure change, the best thing you can do is to
*evangelize the product*. Part of the reason we're tiny is that we can't
afford any more people. The more sales we get, the better off the company
is, and therefore the better off Card Vault will be.

Recent data have shown that awareness of Card Vault is still very low. So
please, don't just use the program on your own. Get your store to carry it.
Get your friends and favorite opponents to download it and try it out (both
the regular program and the free Deck Viewer). Email the CV demo exe file to
folks you know who might be interested. Peer sales are very effective.

The current version on store shelves is V1.0. However, the V1.1 update is
free and accessible directly from within CV, so it's really not a big deal.
In order to manage costs, production runs tend to be large, hence free
updates are made available. This is standard practice for just about every
piece of software currently in production, so I don't understand the cause
of the concern.

Kind of annoying to find that the "free update" is in fact the full
programme, would have been cheaper than the CD you have just paid for and
that this time security doesn't physically require a disc to run the
programme.

Well, it's a matter of effort vs. return. The whole download is relatively
small (by most standards for program size). To have an updater that goes
from any of the released versions up to the most recent would require a
substantial amount of work on our end to setup and maintain with each new
release. And if we didn't automate the whole thing, it would also result in
a bevvy of support questions and frustrated users, thereby adding to the
work involved to do it "right".

So, given the small size, it's just a lot easier to have a single download
of everything that all users can easily grab. The time we save by not
having to develop/maintain the updater is then focused on squeezing another
few features into the update. So it's a tradeoff of what functionality if
more "valuable" to the majority of users.

Basically, when a customer purchases the CD, the key thing he's purchasing
is the license number. Buying the CD provides instant gratification for
that purpose. And most gamers want that instant gratification if they can
get it. :-)

The license includes a year of free updates from the date of first
activation. So theoretically a distributor could have a copy of V1.0 stuck
on a back shelf two years from now that finally makes it to a retailer's
shelf and then into a consumer's hands. Even though V3.0 might have been
released by then, the license enables the user to immediately grab the
latest release, as well as another year of subsequent updates.

So the version that's in the package is actually of no real importance.
It's still preferable to have the latest version of the product in the
package (<G>), but it's really just a convenience for the user.

We actually considered having the CD *NOT* contain the product and instead
contain an updater that automatically grabbed the latest version of the
product. But that flies in the face of what consumers are used to, so we
chose not to go that route. My guess is that this approach will be the way
many products work in the future. But it's not always best to be the one
leading the change, since a lot of folks don't respond well to change. :-)

To be honest, I don't feel like I got my full years worth of this free update.
I originally got my license last september, but CardVault did not really
become usable for me until 1.1 came out. Until that time, it pretty much
lay dormant on my hard drive. 1.0 had major problems until 1.1 came out.

What were the "major problems" you refer to? There were no significant bugs
in V1.0b that I can recall, and V1.0b was released in August. We simply
added new functoinality in V1.1, along with the rewrite of the inventory
manager interface to make it more flexible. So I'm a bit confused by your
reference to "major problems".
