running hero lab with large groups

As a DM I want it, and want to let everyone in my group use it. My group is 8 players and sometimes as much as 11.

Whats the best way to do this? Purchase add ons? Or purchase multiple?

I'm ok with spending for such a nice product.

By the way, I read that at one point there is going to be a DM version and a non-DM version. So that it would synch at some point? Is that still in the works?

I think that the DM/Non-DM split you heard about is the introduction of Realmworks, which is currently in Beta. Realmworks essentially lets you share a wiki of campaign data such that you can mark what's revealed and what's not. I believe it's supposed to interface with HeroLab, although I am not part of the Beta, so I cannot say more.

Im trying to get into the realm works too, but i thought it was something else.

but my mind is a siv lately, so i might be wrong. I thought it was something like I set their state to "disabled" and it auto sets them. Any thoughts on my license question?

Technically the secondary licenses are only supposed to go on your own machines. It's supposed to be so that if you have a desktop, and a laptop, and a computer at work, you can use Hero Lab where ever you go. Not so that if you buy it, your friend can get a copy for free too. So the only answer you're gonna get in these forums is to get a separate license for each player.

As for the DM version, from what I understand is that is a capability they are looking at making happen some time in the future, an undefined point in the future, as they haven't even looked into starting to create said feature. I would love it though.

As a software developer, I can appreciate that answer. This is why I would love a limited version that is a viewer only. Right now, what Im doing is mailing PDF's to my players (I havent given the other people licenses). This way we could have a group license. The primary license would be for full viewing/editting, and a lesser license would be for "viewing" only.

I wish i knew were i read about the DM version. Thought i read about it somewhere on the boards.... i might be imagining things.

The only things we've discussed in the past regarding GM versus players are Realm Works (separate product) and syncing Hero Lab between machines during play. The latter is the ability for GMs to apply effects to a PC that appear on the player's computer and vice versa, allowing use of Hero Lab as an electronic character sheet that is simultaneously updated by both the GM and player. This is something we've sketched out but don't expect to start working on until after we first get a tablet product out.

Hope this helps...

To a certain extent, Hero Lab already serves nicely as a "viewer" by simply running in demo mode. The key limitation is access to the various add-ons for some game systems. However, if you're only using the core package for a game system, you can give a player a saved portfolio, which the player can load up into Hero Lab and view all he wants.

I realize this isn't ideal, but the notion of a separate viewer really doesn't seem to offer lots of value to a large contingent of players. As technology becomes cheaper and more widely available, most players who want more than a printed character sheet will want full interaction with the product, for use as an electronic character sheet during play. That's basically having the full product at their command and not really a "viewer". At least, that's how I'm envisioning this working, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious here. If so, please enlighten me and we can explore the idea further on our end.

the real reason i want a shared, server based, is i make core changes. I add new classes, new feats, with the editor, etc. I guess i could put these on a webpage for auto download, but it would be nice if i make a class feature change, it would be automatically available on all the "client" versions. Or for me to hit them with damage, and have their character sheet auto update, and the like.

Im willing to pay for such a feature, so hopefully this sort of thing will be integrated into realm works, or something along this line.

On the other hand, I understand you need to make a profit, and your work needs to be for the larger userbase. So If im alone on this sortof feature request, I get that.

HL is totally able to do this right now actually. Its how we released the d20 community data set and how what I have started with Pathfinder.

See THIS post for how to set it up from the end-gamers point of view. But the idea is once setup HL will download and install updates that are made by users.

I do the same for my players as it works great. When they start HL it checks for updates and if it finds one it informs them that an update is out and will download and install it.

Basically it has to do with creating a HL Export file known as a (.hl) file. This can be done using "Tools->HLExport". I have plans to create a video tutorial but have not gotten around to it yet.

Let me know if you need help with this and I can give you hand. But even if you just make .hl files that you email to everyone it makes it VERY simple to import into HL as its just a few mouse clicks. :)

Very good to know. I guess I should ask on the mac forums when HLExport is planned for the mac version.
