Request: Help me turn this into a datafile

Hey folks,

I'm playing in a custom game right now and worked with my GM to build a custom class loosely based on the Warmage+EK+Magus.

I've been trying to build it in HeroLab for days but certain abilities simply will not work. Arcane Pool, Bond, Warmage Edge...I just can't get things to work. I'm hoping that some of the board wizards here could help to hammer out a workable .user file for me to load and build my character.

There is an attached PDF with the design specs and I would really appreciate any help that folks are willing to give.

Thanks very much,
Rethlyr

I can take a look at it sometime this week, but work has me running fort a big deadline on Aug 31, and I am busy preping my compnay to go to Gen Con ina few weeks. In fact Lone Wolf is participating in our program so if i dont get it right, LW will be upset with us(lol).

I'll see what i can do, but cant really promise anything. you said you had some of it working, do you have the .user file available?

Here is the original PDF scope document and the .user work done so far. There are three problems:

1) Arcane Bond shows on the call list but when you click it, it is empty and throws a message.

2) Arcane Pool - same issue as above. You cannot add arcane Magus powers even with the pool active (I'm not sure the pool is correctly active either)

3) Warmage's Edge - This is supposed to add (CL/2 minimum 1) damage to any spell that inflicts hitpoint damage. I have no idea how to implement that one.

Thanks again Weasel, I appreciate the help and will get back with you on it.

for the Warmages edge, i would create a special ability and asigned it to the class. it would be us to the users to determine when it was used though as you wouldnt be able to assign it to individual spells.

what message are you getting with the Arcane Bond?

Just for future reference you will get more responses if you post a question about a specific issue then just asking for help on a whole class.

These are both the same issue which is that if you have not made anything to show in those custom choice areas. HL has custom choice areas 1 through 4 and when you make a Custom Special you assign it to your class and tell it which Choice 1-4 it should display on.

The name Arcane Pool/Arcane Bond is just text it has no programming meaning to HL.

3) Warmage's Edge - This is supposed to add (CL/2 minimum 1) damage to any spell that inflicts hitpoint damage. I have no idea how to implement that one.
As mentioned make a new class special that calculates this value and uses a script to set it into the Livename field. Nothing in HL yet calculates damage dice for spells so their is nothing to do other than set a reminder for the player of the class.

I took a lok at the file, well as best i could? what system is this for? It wont load into a pathfinder system and looks more like an authoring kit file and not one from the editor.

are you creating the warmage in the editor of the authoring kit?

Is this warmage from the d20 complete arcane?

Took a quick glance and its for Pathfinder as it has skills listed as sk like skKnowArca instead of k which d20 uses. Looked at the XML quickly and it looks fine to my eye. Though all that is their is the Class and the Class Helper.

What error is it throwing you chiefweasel as I don't have access to HL right now...

Seems the error i got was from when i created a duplicate PF environment for the testing, for some reason it couldnt open the files and says that the APG file is not standard and then it locks. weird.

It looks like the problem is, you have created place holders for Arcane Bond and Arcane Pool. the arcane bond is a Teritary Ability Name and the Arcane Pool is a Quaternary Ability Name. But i dont see where you have create the Class specials for these 2 items. i think thats why they are coming out empty. you havent created them yet.

what should be in them?

if you are trying to link them to the known arcane bonds you would need to select the one you want, or create new ones.

The file was built entirely in the HL editor. Nothing else was used.

This is a modified version of the original warmage. I was looking for just the right gish for a specialized game. I was able to work with the GM to substitute some magus and wizard abilities into the class for versatility.

As far as HL, I'm having a better grasp of where things go...I had loaded the abilities into the class sheet but had not defined the powers under custom abilities.

If I define them as custom abilities and under that tab assign them to the class, do I still need to call on them from the class file or will they be a part of it by default?

How would I add the Magus Arcana choices? I've been trying to add them through custom abilities but all I get is the class option for Arcana. It adds when selected instead of bringing up a submenu to choose the abilities.

have you looked at the Sorc class? it seems like you are trying to handle arcane bond the same way. just copy over the Sorc and make the changes you need to. see if that works.

So things have been going pretty well, but I hit a wierd issue and cant seem to figure it out.

At some point, the tab for the new class disappeared off the menu bar above your PC. If I choose "Fighter" you of course get that tab. Ditto for Wizard. Select my class and nothing appears.

I've compared the class side by side with others and can't figure out what I missed or changed that would make the tab invisible. It worked before, now it is just...gone.

Thanks
