Question and Answer on Error Message

Was about to post what's in quotation marks below and then figured out the solution:

"I recently upgraded to Windows 8. I'm now getting this error message and can't get into Hero Lab.

It gets to the screen that looks for updates after I try to load Pathfinder. Then it says:

The data files could not be loaded due to errors. Hero Lab will now attempt to load them in recovery mode. Once loaded, you can access the editor as normal to correct any errors.

The following errors occurred:

Cannot create core run-time file: C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\pathfinder\core.hlz

Then at the next step it bombs out and just restates the error message immediately about "can't create core run-time file."

Does anyone know the fix? Thanks."

If you find the core.hlz file and then click on properties, you have to make sure the Windows account name you're using the program on is authorized to use the file, so you need to add it to users. When I changed that, the problem was fixed.

Thanks for posting, lorton. This problem often occurs when you've been running Hero Lab in administrator mode (which some of our older versions used to require) and then start running it as a normal user. The previous downloaded files were created with an administrator account, so the normal user can't access them. Our solution is typically to delete the files - after that Hero Lab can recreate them with normal access privileges.
