Ok,

At the risk of getting mail bombed, has anyone done anything with
Armybuilder and mage knight?

I ask, because my 8 year old son is into it, and I just started
myself. He is good with armybuilder for his dark eldar, and was
looking for some files to use with mage knight.

It does not look that tough, just be a bear to keep up with the
releases.

Thanks,

Dwayne

Wow, Your 8 year old son play's Dark Eldar?!?!?!?!?
That's really impressive, he must be a very bright kid.
I wish I could talk my 11, and 9 year old girls into playing,
then I'd have opponents every day!

Never said he was good at it, and he only works with what I have
bought and painted, and of course, he wins only when I let him,
(about 50% of the time).

Army builder lets him choose what he wants to work with, and he sees
when he chooses bad things (like no upgrades for warrior squads, or
no wargear) he loses. Teaching him the basics is easy, any 2nd grader
can play, all he has to be able to do is read the statline, add up
to 6+6. The rest is stragey, which he will gain with age and wisdom.

I have a kindergarder who is starting to play some orks, his reading
is not yet up to par, nor his math. But that should be fixed by time
school starts next year, I am working with him.

To get your girls to play, buy a squad of Sisters (assuming 40k), and
paint them in the girls favorate colors, make them look good.

Have them around the house, dont offer them to the girls. Just make
sure they can see them. I would give it only a few days, they will
want to know more (it sometimes takes a while for it to sink into a
kids skull). Thats your chance to play an intro game with them, show
them that girls can rule the battlefield, and chances are you will
hook them.

I have no trouble getting my girl(yea three kids) to play 'guys' with
me, my problem is keeping her from EATING them. She is only 3.

Good luck, hope it works, its a great way to spend time with your
kids, hopefully your wife will even start looking the other way about
the money your spending (At least you can claim its for the girls'
armies).

Thank you, and yes, It's mostly 40k, but I've rescently begun painting
a WHFB Empire army, and am chomping at the bit to get my mits on
Inquisitor. Your suggestions have been most helpful, and insightful...
I wish I hadn't traded away my Sisters a while back now.... ah well,
if the scuttlebut is true, they're completely reworking the line
anyway.

Thanks again,

Is anyone out there working on or have datafiles for Full Thrust or Dirtside
II? Thanks.

Fred

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Full Thrust files are mostly complete, but I haven't had time to work on
them in a long time. If someone wants to run with the files I've put
together, I'd be happy to pass the baton to someone else.

I do not know of any files for Dirtside, though.

Thanks, Rob

Data files for Mage Knight have been written. We're waiting for approval
from Wiz Kids. We received a verbal OK back in March, but they're extremely
busy over there and we haven't gotten anything nailed down on paper yet.
Keep your fingers crossed it will be completed soon. :-)

Thanks, Rob

Erm... I don't play the game, but aren't all possible stats already
printed on each individual miniature on the little wheel dealy? What's the
point of having an AB Datafile? *puzzled*

With MageKnight, you still need to construct an army out of a boatload of
figures to choose from. And AB is pretty good at that. :-) AB also makes it
convenient to see all the particulars of each model in one place so that
the gamer can design his force and play what-if games with different
models. AB sure beats out having to pick up each model and read the base to
find out all the details.

Yes, MageKnight is vastly simpler than traditional miniatures games, but AB
can still be a useful tool for it. Given its simplicity, I honestly don't
think that there will be droves of MageKnight players buying AB for use
with the game. But existing users of AB that also pick up MageKnight will
definitely find it to be a useful tool for the purpose. And MageKnight
players who use ABLite (which is all they need) will become used to using
AB, so they will likely switch to the full product when they "graduate" to
more traditional miniatures games.

Just my personal perspective....

I currently use AB for Warhammer 40K and just recently started playing
MageKnight. I am defiently looking forward to being able to use Ab for
Mageknight!

Thank you for the info Rob,

I was really hoping I would not have to dive in and give this a try
myself. That looked like ALOT more work than I wanted to.

As to your later comments about not seeing a use (I dont read mail in
order and have had no access the last 2 days), I sure do.

Mainly that my boyz (ages 7 and 8) love army builder for their 40k
armies, and it would allow them to easily create a mage knight army
without them having to do any serious math (just like for 40k).

Plus, I have found AB a god send for creative army building. I can
play around with options and think about them without TONS of math
(which I dont hate, but when your thinking in game terms its a pain
to have to stop and re-add a long colum of numbers, because you
forgot the total you just got a few minutes ago and forgot to write
down.

This still applies to Mage Knight, and while I agree that I dont see
many people buying it JUST for Mage Knight. But after you add the
feature that allows you to store your mini collection in the
datafiles as well (inventory), I could see them coming in droves. It
would be a way to keep track of their collections as well.

Rob you are killing me... I really want to purchase AB for more than
just MageKnight, but since all I am playing at the momemt is MK I
really really need the data files! It has been months since you
had "verbal" commitment from WizKids and awaiting written. Today they
released the first expansion set with an additional 142 units,
bringing the total up to 218 (including the 16 promo units).

What can I do as part of the MageKnight community do to help you
expedite this with WizKids?

All I can say is that we're actively trying to get official approval from
Wiz Kids. We got verbal approval a long while back and are now waiting for
something in writing. I'm sure that Wiz Kids has been extremely busy
getting Lancers out, so they've been pretty distracted with more pressing
matters. Now that Lancers is out, I'm hoping that we can get things resolved.

At present, data files exist for the first wave of figs. Nothing has yet
been done for Lancers, but I don't think Lancers would be too difficult to
add. Once we get approval, things should happen pretty quickly.

As for what you can do to expedite things, I can think of two things.
First, you could get others excited about using AB for the game. You could
also politely encourage Wiz Kids to officially approve the data files so
that you and others can start using them. I'm sure if Wiz Kids hears polite
requests from their gamers for approved AB data files, the priority will
probably get bumped up a notch. :-)

Thanks, Rob
