Problem adding new spell

So I'm trying to do something very simple with the editor. I'm making a copy of the 0-level spell Ray of Frost as a new spell Ray of Fire. I change the name, unique ID, and all the cold parameters to fire parameters. I save the object. I test the object. I save the data file.

I do back to HL and see if it's in the spellbook when I create a new wizard. It is not. I attempt to add it to the spellbook. It is not in the list of available spells to add.

I go back to the editor and re-verify everything, but all I did was create a copy and change some names, so it should otherwise be identical to Ray of Frost and thus should be available as a 0 level spell. I attempt to re-test/verify it and I get this message:

"Specified thing is actively in use. All references must be deleted before changes can be applied."

So I exit the editor. I exit HL in total. I restart HL. I open the editor. I attempt to test/verify the spell again. Again I get the message printed above. Again I check in HL and the spell is not available.

I come to the HL forums and attempt to search on both the error message above and the phrase "add new spell" but the forum search box doesn't let me do so telling me that the terms are either "too short, too long, too common" and thus doesn't allow me to search the forum to see if this problem has occurred before and if there is already a fix to it.

I'm confused as to how what I'm trying to do is all that difficult. It's a simple duplication of a spell, I would think this would be one of the easiest things to do in HL.

FWIW I tried checking the box to not automatically add the spell to the spellbook (since it's a level 0 spell). If I do that, then the spell will be available for adding. However since I do this, it means that I am 'overbudget' when adding free spells, and thus get a validation error.

So why is it that the spell is there but is NOT added for free to the spellbook when the box is unchecked?

When I tried to do something similar it didn't work right until I checked the "Not Legal for Pathfinder Society Characters" box, have you done that?

Thanks! That's what it was. Wish they'd put that in the how-to/example!

Search is your friend on these forums.

Yes, hence the reason that I wrote the following in my original post:

Ergo the reason I posted a question since the search function failed to provide anything of value when I used it

I just tried every possible combination of using search to reproduce your issue. All searches work and produce a list of topics. I even tried just the word "spell" and that brings back thousands of posts but it still worked. :(

You are using the search button in the TOP right of the forums correct? Only tip I have is make sure you show results using "Show Posts" instead of "Show Threads" as its easier to find what you are looking for. But both still show results.

This is not the correct way to solve the issue. So of course its not in any documentation. :(
Then why does it work? :p

(I wish there was a House Rule checkbox for "Blog Cantrips appear in Spellbooks", I bet that's more common than most of the options that are already in that section.)

I don't have a good reason why it works without allot of research. My guess is a bug that causes the cantrip to become bootstrapped to the hero when you add the PFS tag. I almost wonder if the logic is backwards and the cantrip should be bootstrapped "unless" the PFS tag is found???

My point is sense its NOT meant to work you have no guaranteed that it will continue to work. Any new update to Pathfinder could cause it to stop working especially if it gets fixed. :)

The post I pointed to actually has the correct solution in it and will always work going forward as its the method that is supported.
