This is something that has bugged me for a bit. Not a big deal, but it is
kind of a pain. It seems that every time I update my AB install to the
newest version of the 40k data file (for example) all of my army lists are
invalidated. I can't reload a list and expect it to still be functional so
I can tweak my existing army to fight this particular opponent or whatever.
I have to build a new army list because I updated to the newest version of
the rules basically.

Plus... if I don't export the list to HTML or Text and it happened to be a
really kick butt army configuration... I've lost it... and since I was up
way past my bedtime working on that killer army, I can't remember the exact
config anymore. See where I'm headed?

Is there any way that some standarization functionality to the army lists
could be added to AB? Some unique identifier for each record or a converter
that will update your army list files when you have to update to the newest
version of the data file (rules, imho). This may not be such a big deal
with other game systems, but with GW games (especially 3rd ed. 40k) the
rules are being updated almost constantly either through Codex release,
Chapter Approved or the FAQ, etc. I would think that a unit selection of an
SM Tactical Squad in v4.32412 of the 40k data file would be the exact same
record in v4.32413 or whatever (read as even minor changes to the data file
seem to kill army lists sometimes).

Am I just way off here because I don't understand data file design or is
this possible? If it is possible, I'd love to see it on the What's New list
of the next version of AB. *wink*

Please enlighten me. =)

IIRC, Rob is already working on fixing this issue.

One fine day in the middle of the night, Dennis Davis

For the record, if it ever gets through that many versions I may kill
myself.

As far as I know, in the last few (about 5 IIRC) versions of the
datafiles I've made no changes that cause "Your file will no longer
work! HAHAHAHA! BOW TO THE EVIL GODS OF ARMY BUILDER!" error messages.
You should be able to get along fine with that, even if you have to
delete a unit or two that no longer functions correctly. In the last
couple of releases, which of your rosters have stopped working?

Rob, can we have a new release ASAP that fixes the 'no roster appears on
loading' bug? Even if it's the only thing that gets fixed, it'd be nice
to stop getting complaints about it all the time :)

Actually... I haven't been trying to save army lists recently. I gave up
and just made sure when I came up with a kick butt army, I HTML'ed it so I
would have a record of it. It's works ok, but it'd be really nice to have
one configuration and be able to tweak it for a particular need. I'm glad
to hear it's being worked on. =)

This issue is largely controlled by the data file author. The data files
are quite large, so saved roster files simply track references back into
those data files. If the data files are changed substantially, then the
references link back to invalid information, causing AB to throw up its
hands and fail to load the roster. For 40K, Colen has been VERY attentive
to this detail in recent updates, so the frequency with which this occurs
should be small.

Right now, a saved roster is either loaded successfully or not. I have it
on the todo to try and reload individual units instead of the entire
roster. This would ensure that only specific units that are broken are lost.

Thanks, Rob

Sir, Yes Sir!! :-)

Actually, I just finished a major task last night that has been consuming
VAST amounts of my time. I intend to get a bug fix update out before the
end of the month if at all possible.

Thanks, Rob
