I just use Google Image Search until I find something useful.

"space armor female"
"human marine pistol sword"

Sometimes you have to go through lots of pages, and if you find something similar, branch off and search from there.

"Cosplay" is a good term to use, because there are good portraits and full body shots of people, but you sometimes have to photoshop out convention backgrounds.

For royalty and officers and nobility there are loads of photos of obscure world leaders and high ranking military officers that have official portraits.

I'll never be able to share my work because it's all ripped off from sites all over the web for my use. My main villain is a portrait of Vincent D'Onofrio with rank symbols and medals photoshopped on. :-)

Deviantart has a lot of great looking paintings by people. Lots of fantasy, etc.

If you have Hero Lab, you can take advantage of some of the fantastic portraits that come with the various game systems. On PCs, it can be found by going to Documents>Hero Lab>Images.

You might also want to poke around the Hero Lab forums; you'd think this question would have come up plenty of times before.

I generally agree with using Deviantart for pretty much any style you can think of. If Anime is something you find acceptable, have a look at animecharactersdatabase.com as well.
