Player version, access

I'm working on building my pathfinder campaign. I got some Amazon Fire tablets since the had a Cyber Monday sale for a whopping $33. I bought a few of them to let my players use them for in game rules access. I'm also getting the Hero Lab Android app and building their characters in Hero Lab so they have electronic character sheets as well. I set up DropBox so I can build and update the characters and let them get them. Then I can use DropBox to send them private messages as well, directly from my computer to their tablets.

Now comes in Realm Works. I have had it since the Kickstarter, but never really got into it. I'm trying to build my campaign now, but I'm wondering what I can do on Fire tablets to let my players access the campaign info. I'm pretty sure the player version of the program wouldn't work, but is there anyway I can still get the information to them? I was under the impression that there would be a web based interface so I could just publish the public info and let them read what they did last session or what they know about a place or person. Is there a way to do this, or am I looking for functionality that doesn't exist?

For complete information, I'm running Realm Works on a Macbook with Parallels and Windows 10, and will be using for the players Amazon Fire tablets 7" 5th generation.

Ok, ill break this thread apart for you.

The Hero Lab Android App is NOT official. It might work, it might not, I find it is quite bland for D&D5e.

What might work is making pdf copies of the sheets? They could run those on the tablets, but that's read only. All the apps are read only though, they don't interact with the actual Hero Lab files. There are two from memory. Both allow very basic changes, like HP tracking, but nothing is actually working so to speak.

Realm Works is currently only available on Windows. So I have some bad news for you in relation to your tablets. What you want is the web access which is not available currently. We have seen a video, we have drooled over it for a long time. But the current focus of the Dev Team is the Content Market (Due towards end Dec).

Web View Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmfq8UR4WCI

The only way you can really achieve what you want currently is to make a copy of the content you want to share into something that will share it. I used to use Obsidian Portal but it's a pain in the ass to have to keep the content in two places.

I'm hopeful that LW go full steam ahead on the web view once the Content Market is out. Even if it's just the plain read-only version shown in the video. My player's would love this, I would love this and I be happy to have a very plain version of it now while further development is made on it.

Also, even the web view won't be designed as "instant access" for use during the game. Any player access to information in the realm is really designed to be used between games.

When realm sharing becomes available, you could possibly implement your own web view (read-only) of an XML export of a realm by applying an appropriate XLST/CSS (but that relies on some programming), but this would still only be feasible as a between-game source of data.

This has been a real nuisance for me for some time.

I have a really great android tablet I use for a lot of things that I can't use at games since it doesn't have a HL client.

Most of my players have iPads, which has a great HL client that they do use, but that doesn't have a RW player version.

I know its not an official Hero Lab app, but I've used one for android and it works pretty well. It does the math, tracks hit points and allows some editing. I'm using the tablets as digital character sheets and it functions well enough for what I need.

I may have to go to Obsidian Portal then. I was hoping there was a way I could make information accessible with RealmWorks since I've been waiting for a good reason to use it since it came out, but I guess I'll have to try something else.

Thanks all.

Isn't it amusing how LWD's user base is split due to hardware? HL runs on iPads but not Androids. RW runs on PC's but only via emulation on Macs and not on tablets. While the web may not be perfect, porting both to web-based would be spiffy even if that only allows limited functionality.
