Noob-level question; linking RW and HL

So...while I've been tooling around with RW for a few days now and I've had HL for a while; what I'm curious to know is how do the two mesh together to become a cohesive whole, so to speak. Is it just a matter of importing character/npc text into RW or is there a built-in mechanism set up to handle that for you?

Nice.

Now I just have to watch more videos and figure out the nuances of this program. It's time a took a break from tinkering with HL anyway....

Thanks for the info!

There's also 2 buttons you should look at when you import a portfolio to RW.

The first will show you a statblock of the portfolio. That's a great way to see what the portfolio contains without opening HL. Also, if it's like 2 goblins or something, you can quickly and easily see what their stats are, what the combat moral is, tactics, and items that they have on them after their eventual defeat. Simple, easy table of what's in the portfolio. Great way to get it done quickly.

The second button will IMPORT the portfolio into an already opened HL session. So if you have your players opened in HL and you import the encounter portfolio, you can use all the nifty tools in HL like initiative tracker, power descriptions, add/remove effects like bless or rage or mage armor, things like that. You can see that the Wizard you've imported has a Magic Missile spell that does 2D4+5 or whatever. VERY useful.

But the best part of importing, IMHO, is when the party says, "I want that sword," or, "I'll take that armor," or my favorite, "I'll put on the [cursed] amulet the necromancer was wearing," you can EASILY click the item container button in HL and choose "give to hero...." to divvy up party loot without having to go back later and reinput stuff over and over again. BIG time saver.

You can also open HL from RW with the import (I think) if you don't have it open already. It's pretty nifty.

VERY useful for when you don't have your party in HL, but there's conditions on the encounter like, "If the alarm went off in room B4 the guards from B7 will join the fight in this room as well." So you'd open HL with the guards in the room you're in, go to the B7 topic, and add them to the fray.

The HL snippet is the best part of RW if you use HL at all in your game. It's awesome.

Interesting. I had not known it did an import of data. I'll have to give this a try, as I haven't been adding HL snippets at all, thinking it would be too clunky (it was in the past, and I discarded the notion). Things appear to have improved vastly. Thanks for pointing this out.

A recent addition to HL is a single menu option which removes all the "enemies" from the portfolio so that you get back to just the party characters for the next encounter.

Yeah, that's a very nice feature. I LOVE the tac. console in HL and importing your encounter into your party is also a good way to track not just the enemies, but the players too.

I leave HL up for the whole game, and when my cleric uses a wand charge, I can tick it off too. If my barbarian uses Rage, and then gets hit with con damage, I can IMMEDIATELY see what the effect is.

It's a great tool. And the ability to move equipment over to whoever gets the Ring of Jumping from the BBEG or whatever is great. Clearing out enemies is a GREAT addition to HL, and works really well with RW.

There are limitations to the Tactical Console though. The initiatives get sorted incorrectly. Initiative ties are sorted from lowest intiative bonus to highest, which is wrong. Also, I've noticed that it likes to resort on Delays and Readys as well. It should never resort those. It's one of my biggest pet peeves while using it, that I have to fix the sort order all the time.

Also, I've had to put special code in place to track the duration of effects. It would be nice if that was a feature as well.
