New to Hero Lab - some question

Purchased HL at GENCON this past weekend, and I have a few question after installing the software. I've been using Army Builder for years.

I selected the Authoring Kit as my package, thinking this give the most versitility to add user created content. Put I don't see any way to user content. The only files to download the the ones I would need to buy a seperate liscense for.

I play d20 Modern, and I saw a thread that has user created files, and requires you to copy the d20 folders, and replace the content with the user created files. Should I have purchased the d20 package instead for this to work?

I also purchased d20Pro at GENCON. Does the paired functionality only work with the d20 package?

Sorry if these seem like basic questions, but I searched around and really couldn't find an answer.

Thanks,
Don

The Authoring Kit is for creating a completely new set of data files for a game system - from scratch. If you're adapting an existing game system, then you need to purchase that game system instead.

I'm not really familiar with what's been done for d20 Modern using Hero Lab. I know there's also a Modern adaptation for Pathfinder available. My guess is that you want either the d20 System or Pathfinder option as your initial game system instead of the Authoring Kit, but I recommend confirming that (and which one) prior to switching anything.

Once you know which game system you actually need, please send an email to tech support, explaining that you selected the wrong initial game system and specifying the one you actually want. Nancy can get that switched over for you, and then you should be good to go.

The integration with d20Pro works for both d20 System and Pathfinder. Once you determine the correct game system for Hero Lab, you ought to be able to get things integrated with d20Pro.

Thanks. That helps a bunch. I'll dig around and see which one (d20 or Pathfinder) I should switch to.

So for example, I can switch to d20 and if I don't like what's already out there for Modern, I can modify the existing d20 files using Hero Lab (similar to modifiying files in Army Builder)? The ability to mod something (not create something) isn't only contained within Authoring Kit?

Don

The authoring kit will allow you to make modifications to existing system, or even create systems that are very close to existing ones. an example would be DragonStar for the
d20 system. If i use the editor i can effectively create DragonStar without using the authoring kit.

You can't modify the data files entirely for a game system like d20. However, you can rip out a bunch of stuff and replace it with your own content - or simply add lots of content of your own.

Hero Lab does NOT work the same as Army Builder, even if you utilize the Authoring Kit. However, the Authoring Kit requires that you create the data files entirely from scratch. You can't, for example, start with the d20 files and completely revamp them, since we don't release the complete source for the d20 data files.

true, sorry about that Rob. If you need to copy the restricted file your best option is to open 2 copies of HL and copy from one to the other.

Sounds good. d20 Modern is basically d20, so I can change feats/skills as needed, without doing a complete revamp.

Thanks,
Don

Yep, The Modern Path 2.0 is a modern setting for the Pathfinder RPG. It is a complete re-write and updated to the Pathfinder rule system.
The is an older modern Pathfinder datafile, I think still at ShadowChemosh d20pfsrd site and a few others, and it is very close to d20 Modern. The is also a d20 Modern dataset for the d20 setting, but that was some time ago.

Can you explain briefly the differences in Modern Path 2.0 and d20 Modern. My players and I have been using d20 Modern, but are not opposed to switching if it makes sense.

Thanks,

Well, it is a modern setting for the Pathfinder rule system. There is a 30 page preview on RPGNow and from the intro of the book:

"We did not want to reinvent the wheel; we just wanted to make it roll smoother on the modern highway (maybe with some low-pro bling 22’s). The rules system in the Modern Path – Heroes of the Modern World RPG is, what we feel, an evolutionary step forward for a system that has already proven to be excellent in another genre. Thanks to the wonderful OGL, we admit that most of the work was already done. What we have focused on is making a system that is versatile, as is fitting for the modern times.
Because of globalization, characters in a modern setting should not be “pigeon-holed” into classes or areas of knowledge. We offer only one base class – the Modern Hero, a framework upon which to build. It is then up to the player to build his own unique character, and to have the freedom to shape that character as it advances through the levels of experience. So, versatility and freedom of choice… Let’s make that our hallmark.
Now go on, grab those Pathfinder Role Playing Game rules, get your dice ready & boot up that laptop…quit wasting time reading intros!"
