Can anyone point me at a tutorial on how to create a new race? I don't have the time to really sit down and learn by trial and error.

I also found ShadowChemosh's videos to be very helpful:

If your starting into using the Editor my advice is to read the "Glossary of Terms" to get a handle on the terminology.
Then check out FAQ#2 on the editor and it shows all the places to find help. Most people find the four intro videos very helpful in getting up to speed in using the editor.
Though races don't often require as much scripting so the last video may not be very helpful.
