need help creating a new animal companion

Let me start by stating that I am a noob. I have been using HL for a few months now, but just started messing with the editor over the past couple of days. I tried to find the answer to my desired feature via the forums here and some googling. What little I did find was a bit above my head atm.

My GM in a home game has told me that my ranger can have a magical beast (Chupacabra to be specific) as my animal companion. This is proving to be difficult get HL to accept as a Chupa is a magical beast. So I'll do my best to list the courses of action I have taken within the editor to no avail. After each experiment I updated my licence and restarted HL.

I created a user file and added the Chupa race to animal companion group. No luck.
I then eared the info from that user data file and went over to animal companion races tab. I copied a dog race and renamed it test dog. Made sure to give it a unique ID and stuff and did the reactivate+ restart of HL. The test dog isn't showing up either, so I know I am doing something fundamentally wrong.

A few observations: Under configure hero: I cannot select user content at all. It is grayed out. Is that my issue? Do I need to buy something?
