Monstrous Race Modification

Greetings,

I'm working on modifying a Monstrous Race for a PC to play, and I have a question.

Is there an easy way to remove some of the HD the race has - ie a weaker version of the race to use as a PC so I can add a class level or two in its place.

Duplicate the race, change the lines:
Hit Dice
Default Starting HP
Race Type

Plus anything else you like.
 
Not part of the answer, but this got me thinking. I can recall how Savage Species did it, where you spend levels on a race. Is that what you are doing? Has anyone made up a class-level version for a Vampire?
