Military Rank Benefit

JDRook

Well-known member
While I was statting some agents, I tried using the Benefit (military rank) feat from Golden Age to fill out their agent rank. I noticed that the first rank of this Benefit doesn't seem to cost any points, which I didn't even notice immediately. After the first rank the cost does seem to increase properly, but still at -1 the rank: 0pp for rank 1, 1pp for rank 2, etc, topping out at 10pp for rank 11.

Looking in Golden Age on page 43, there's a chart of the military ranks ranging from Private/Seaman to General of the Army/Fleet Admiral. I assume that's what these ranks are emulating. However the first rank of Private/Seaman is actually a zero point cost. Mechanically, this seems to simulate a -1 Drawback (Chain of Command) that balances out the advantages of military rank.

Since it's probably too complicated to get ranks to display in full in HeroLab (ie Benefit MR 5 displaying Lt. Colonel or Commander), would it be possible to get the military rank feat to display a zero at "first" rank, reflecting both its actual cost and position on the rank chart?

features of Sanctum Sanctorum

Sort of related to the Military Rank post....well, okay, maybe not related but JDRook's post jogged my memory....

When you select the pre-made Sanctum Sanctorum, and I presume this will happen with other pre-made bases/vehicles, you get a single level of Security Systems and of Concealment.

However, there aren't any increase/decrease arrows. If you Concealment or Sec. Sys. you get the arrows and the E.P. spent is correct BUT the printout then lists Concealment 1, Concealment 3 instead of Concealment 4.

It would be helpful to have the ability to increase (or decrease) the "included" Features of a pre-made vehicle/HQ. :)

Keep up the good work,

JDRook - I'm not sure what the issue is here - the first rank of "Benefit (military rank)" is a zero point cost in Hero Lab, just as the book describes, and each other rank costs (rank-1) points. What is the error?

Nigel Fogg - I'll add this to my to-do list. :)

My impression is that it's in the display of it. Scanning the character sheet, he winds up with one more feat than his total would seem to indicate since normally, every feat costs 1 pp unless it's got a number after it which indicates the number of points.

Duggan has it right. The display is not really an error, but I do feel it's misleading. To elaborate:

When you pick that benefit it displays as (approximately):

Benefit (military rank) < 1 >

with the < 1 > representing the standard rank meter used with any ranked feat. This costs zero pp and, looking on the Golden Age chart, gives the rank of Private. What I'm suggesting is setting up the benefit to have:

Benefit (military rank) < 0 >

as the base display, at zero pp cost, for rank Private in order to be more in tune with the GA Military Rank chart.

I'm assuming it would not be too difficult to implement, but then again, if I'm the only one noticing it, it's probably not a huge issue.

Hmm... that would either be really easy to do, in which case I'll do it, or very hard. :) I'll look into it for the next update - thanks for the explanation.
