MiC - Additional Bonuses to Existing Items

Here is a challenge I am facing. In the Magic Item Compendium, it gives rules for adding bonuses to items and its associated cost (p. 234). Since discovering it, my players love to add increases to ability scores to items.

I recognize that you can create a magic item and just add the relative increase to the item and it will work fine. However, I do not want to have to make a new Ring of Protection every time someone decides to add something different to the item.

The solution I came up was that I created unique items that provided the benefit relevant from the characters backpack. So, if a player buys a ring of protection +1 and Str +6, I can just add a Non-slotted item of Str +6 in their backpack. It grants the bonus and has the appropriate cost tied to it.

The problem is that, in a month from now, I may not remember which Item granted the Str +6. So what I was wondering, is there a way to make it so that I can create an item that has a drop down that grants a bonus and allows me to choose one of the other items in the characters inventory? This way I can effectively track which item grants which bonus.

I am open to other solutions as well. I thought about making the Non-sloted item a container and sticking the associated item into the container, but that's more of a work around than a solution.

I haven't tried it, but you might be able to create a custom ability or a feat and then bootstrap it to the item. The code you need could easily be drawn from the adjustment for attribute (temporary). Barring that, I might recommend simply changing the names of the items to reflect what they do and starting them all off the same way so they are all lumped together.

Alright, I figured out a solution. Similar to the Weapon and Armor crystals, I created a crystal of each bonus for each slot they can improve, with the associated cost. This allows you to buy them, equip them to the appropriate slot, and gain its benefit. Not perfect, but as close as I can figure out.
