Martial Weapon Proficiency and Bastard Sword

JTStorm

Hello,

I am attempting to make a Rogue with the Swashbuckler Archtype, and for the Martial Training Ability under the Rogue tab, it doesn't allow the option to take the Bastard Sword. It also doesn't appear under the Martial Weapon Proficiency when choosing a feat.

I know you need to take the Exotic Weapon Proficiency to use it one handed, but that isn't my intent.

Am I missing something on this situation?

Thanks,
Tom

Okay. The way it works is, if your character isn't already proficient with all martial weapons, then the only option, in Hero Lab, is to wait until you can take Exotic Weapon Proficiency. Besides, there is no need to take Bastard Sword as a martial, then turn around and take the Exotic feat.

As a work around you could go into the editor, New (Copy) the Bastard sword, change Proficiency required to Martial and change Class to Two-handed.

Take longsword proficiency in order to be proficient with a bastard sword (wielded in both hands).

Umm I am missing a step here as I just tried that and it still shows the -4 to hit with the weapon. Even when equipped in both hands. :(

The other easy work around is to put in an adjustment to make you proficient with the weapon. You will just have to remember its only when wielding the weapon in two-hands.

Sorry, it looks as though I was mis-remembering the rules. I thought I remembered that if you were proficient in longswords, you were proficient in using bastard swords two-handed. I guess I was confusing them with sawtooth sabres and Aldori Dueling Swords.

to use a bastard sword two-handed it is a Martial weapon prof. You must be prof in all martial weapons to us it thus.

Correct, except that Hero Lab does not model this. Bastard Sword is treated as untrained unless you explicitly have Exotic Weapon Prof: Bastard Sword.

Or when you have ALL Martial weapons training like a fighter or barbarian. Then this does work because really that is RAW if you read it. Bastard Sword is Exotic so you must be a Fighter like class that gets ALL martial weapons to use it two-handed or you must take the Exotic Weapon feat.

So HL is 100% by the CORE rules but I was listing a way of using adjustments to input your house rule. That or like mentioned make a new Martial version of the Bastard Sword(2H) or a Martial Proficiency Feat custom made that will allow you to pick Bastard Sword or Dwarven Waraxe.

So just to be sure we are on the same page the options above are ways of easily inputting your houserule in regards to Bastard Swords. :)

Except that it doesn't work that way in HL currently. Make a fighter that gets all martial weapons. Bastard Sword is greyed out and is treated as non-proficient until you take Exotic: Bastard Sword, at which point you can use it either way.

And actually taking the feat Martial Weapon Proficiency(Bastard Sword) is a completely legal feat selection.

It's greyed out as non-proficient, but add it and equip it in both hands and it becomes proficient.

Well crap... it never even occurred to me that it would work. That's not terribly intuitive UI, but hey, it works. Punt that bug I just filed then. :o

Any Fixes for This?

Hi. I know this is an old thread, but I've just bought HeroLab and I'm having exactly this problem. I tried buying the sword anyway, but it is not giving me the option to use it two-handed. Please see attached photo for details. Is there any way to fix this?

Tick both the boxes - so that HL knows you are using it 2-handed. You won't have a validation error or non-proficient message.
